"I purchased an old house that needed a lot of work when getting estimates I was encouraged by Henry's assurances that they would scrape and sand to remove the peeling lead paint. After nearly two months of delaying the job, I was disappointed to return home on the first day to see they had already painted the first coat and had not lived up to my expectations in removing the old. While the crew was very respectful of my property, neighbors and clean up I feel they rushed the job."

Customers say: True professional

"Dave Barone of Barone Professional Painting did an excellent job of painting all interior surfaces of our two bedroom townhouse. It included painting all ceilings, walls, baseboards, doors, and window embrasures. Especially challenging was painting the large cathedral ceiling over the living/dining area. The walls and ceilings received two coats of paint. He was courteous, polite, easy to talk to, and punctual. He started the painting on time, as promised, and worked hard to finish the job on time. His price was very reasonable and the paint job was professionally done. I plan to hire him again for exterior painting of our townhouse."

"We purchased a house that was built in 1969 and nothing had been updated. We have been slowly remodeling and decided to contract someone out for the drywall work. We removed wallpaper after wallpaper in each of the rooms and with the removal came some of the drywall. We also decided to completely revamp our kitchen; which included ripping out tree beams that made the room feel smaller as well as cabinets. The beams and kitchen ceilings needed drywall and extensive repairs. Hutton Painting worked hard to repair walls, remove rest of wallpaper, patch up drywall where needed, replace or put drywall where it was missing from the removal of cabinets and prep the walls for paint. They were extremely professional and got the job done. The crew even worked around our electrician that came out and we had no electric for 2 days; we very rarely find a company that does that. One of the guys Justin always was there to answer any of our questions and was extremely understanding about our needs. They even walked through the house with us several times and anything we needed to adjust, add on, or fix they did it. We have another full bathroom and bedroom that needs work and we will be calling them again. Great guys and great service. Thank you Hutton Painting and Angies List for this great company."

"I highly recommend Milev Contracting for wallpaper removal and all your painting requirements. Nick is a perfectionist and the quality of his work is second to none. We hired him to remove the wallpaper and then paint our living room. He has transformed this formerly drab room into a one of beauty. Thank you Nick!!"

"I would like to recommend Chris Rooney who I hired to remove wallpaper, paint, install wood trim, baseboards, and crown molding. <br /> To his credit, my home looks much better than it did and I feel much better about living here ( and it's been 22 years at this property). <br /> I had painted walls and removed wallpaper myself in the past. I grew tired of the task and decided to put some saved money into making me feel better by looking at beautiful surroundings. Chris dropped off a book of paint colors a good two weeks before he began his work. He was very accessible and returned all my calls and emails. He was very polite and accommodating. His men were also very engaging and cleaned up after themselves. I asked Chis to come back twice to repair areas that were disappointing. He made those repairs without any fuss or extra cost. I was unhappy with the visible joints in the newly installed crown molding and he was able to greatly improve the appearance. As Chris and his crew worked, I grew happier with my house and I kept asking him back to do more. <br /> Thanks, Chris! <br />"

"D.L. Ritchie did a beautiful job painting the interior of my house! They were friendly and respectful, showed up promptly, and got the job done quick. The owner took the time to discuss colors with me, helping me choose the exact paint shades I needed. They were also able to remove old wallpaper and beatifully restore our walls. Their work is clean and flawless, and their paint job completely CHANGED the rooms in my house. Their prices are super reasonable, and I definitely recommend hiring them for any of your painting needs!"

"We hired Chris, Paul and their team to patch and paint the holes created in the plaster walls of our home after we had knob and tube replaced, and then they also took on additional work in doing repairs and restoration of the home. They were thorough, professional, timely and responsive. They were patient with us and Chris also has a good eye for design. They cared about the home like it was theirs and went above and beyond in their work. Look no further if you need someone to work on your historic home. We would recommend them highly."

"Matt and his crew did a fantastic job.  They were friendly, clean, and professional and really took their time to make sure that each wall and trim were perfectly painted.  Its evident that Matt takes pride in his work and he was great to work with!  We chose some bold and dark colors that required extra layers of paint and time to complete.  They still managed to complete the project on time and on budget.  Would absolutely do business with them again and am planning on it.  <br />"

"I called several other painters either from craigslist or out of the phone book I either had guys not show up, give me an insane price, or they appeared to be on something. Then a coworker of mine gave me Llewellyn's number and said they had done a great job for them last fall. They showed up on time, laid out the whole process for me, and answered every question I had. They explained to me that I should probably leave my dogs in a seperate part of the house to avoid any issues. The day the workers showed up they were very professional. They started by plasticing off all areas with carpet and hard wood. The painting was done in a timely manner and I had no issues. I will use them in the future and highly recommend every one else do the same."

FAQs for wallcovering or wallpaper removal projects in Pittsburgh, PA

You can determine your wall type through tactile and visual tests. Start by checking the surface by inserting a thumbtack, feeling the texture, tapping to listen for a hollow sound, and examining cut edges under outlet covers. Drywall feels soft with a hollow sound, while plaster is hard and solid. These checks are especially useful in older homes where plaster is more common.

After removing wallpaper, you can dispose of small amounts in your household trash. However, if you are removing wallpaper from your entire home, you’ll need to contact a waste removal service, rent a dumpster, or arrange a special pick-up with your municipality’s waste service. Wallpaper cannot be recycled, so it is important to keep it separate from the recycling stream to comply with local waste guidelines.

It takes a professional from several hours up to a full day to remove wallpaper from a single room. The removal duration depends on the type of adhesive, the age of the wallpaper, the condition of the wall, and the number of layers present. High ceilings and additional layers increase the time required, as extra care is taken to protect the wall surface while ensuring a complete removal.

Using fabric softener with water is an option for removing wallpaper, but its effectiveness is limited and depends on the type of wallpaper being used. This low-cost method is most effective on modern, less porous wallpaper and may not yield optimal results on vintage or textured varieties. It might also affect wall surface preparation for new coverings if the residue is not completely removed. For stubborn adhesive or textured surfaces, professional solutions are recommended to ensure a thorough removal without damaging the underlying wall.
