"the owner Josh was abrupt from the get go.  When I objected to a $125.00 charge for a 10 minute job of installing an diverter, he ranted about how expensive it was to run a business, and that what people like me expected it was a more than they paid for with a service call from Angie's list. He then told me he had driven 30 min to get to Fountain Hills...(I had called the office and asked about Fountain Hills before buying the special, as I know it is a problem if they do not usually travel from Phoenix to Mesa on Shea.) 
After installing the diverter ( the one I had purchased did not fit), I asked that he caulk around the diverter, between the end of the metal and the wall.  Josh acted like it was a special request to finish the job.  I said that I had other properties---as a preliminary to saying that I had plumbers in place for the Phoenix area, and he went off on another rant..."If I hear one more time how 'I have other properties...etc...and I have yet to get a second job out of that promise.'  I was opening with that line to say I had a Phoenix area plumber that was good, and I was looking for an east side provider, but I didn't get the chance.  When Josh reviewed the bill, he indicated that the Angie's deal was a $450+ bargain, and I have to assume that was also some kind of justification for charging so much for a 10 minute job (plus the part). 
 All in all, the work seemed to be fine.  When Josh told me that he had hired an independent firm to tell him he should charge $250+ to install a diverter, and that he was giving me a bargain at $125, that was the last straw.  In Newport, CA, or NYC, maybe, but in Phoenix, Arizona. The diverter would have to be gold plated and include a massage and facial to cost $250+ to install.  And even then, it would have been caulked after installation without a cranky "well if that is what you want."  If I were the owner of the company, I would fire this guy for not understanding customer service...oh yea, it is HIS COMPANY so there is no recourse.
I understand that the pressure of making a business pay for itself is tricky. I understand that the Angie's list specials are loss leaders, and that add on work is and should be performed at a standard rate.  But $250+ to install a tub divertier---without caulk and with a heavy dose if attitude is just too much.
On the way out the door he said "have a nice day,"  and it made me feel sad.  If you come to a customer site cranky, then act like the customer is trying to rip you off..."have a nice day" will not redeem the situation.  My whole client base is small business,so I do have a soft spot  for people who risk running their own businesses.  I'll chalk this up to the heat, but would not even let Josh look at the other problem I had after the first response.
