"I can’t say enough fantastic things about this team. I hired them to do a structural assessment/plans for my long-awaited home renovation. To start, Rob contacted me after my inquiry within the same business day. At that point I had gotten a few quotes and found their pricing to be the most reasonable. In staying with the theme of responsiveness, to keep my project on schedule, I needed plans back within about a week, and to my joy, they delivered! Before this, hiring a structural engineer seemed daunting, but they made it easy. Everyone - Rob, the engineers (Miguel & Steve) and Michelle, (their operations manager) were so accommodating and friendly. If the thought of hiring a structural engineer stresses you out, call CBS. If you hire them I think you’ll understand why I’ve given them such high praise ?"

"Quite well. The engineering firm, Criterium-Schimnowski Engineers, was easy to deal with and I was able to get an appointment that was only a few days in the future. On the day of the appointment, the engineer was on time, professional and highly skilled. The inspection report, including detailed repair instructions, was sent only a few working days later."

"It went very well, this was not an easy task due to the attachment point for the rail was not ideal. However Andy and his fellow co-worker used their creativity to secure a strong practical rail. These guys were very professional he kept me informed about his arrival time and encouraged open communication. He was willing to work with me financially and the price was very reasonable. He was concerned about my satisfaction. I would definitely use this company again and refer them to others. I think reviews are important when finding someone to do a job that meets your expectations, Again you won't be disappointed with this company. Also his time from me contacting him to doing the job was 3 days. Thanks again for a job well done."

"The engineer assigned to our job was polite, prompt and knowledgeable. <br /> He made his assessment, pointed out what he was looking for - and did NOT see - in the way of damage so we could be well-informed and alert for any future problems. <br /> My only and quot;mark-downand quot; is on cost - which is merely a reflection of my wallet, not of the value of the services offered, which was stellar. <br />"

"White Crane did a wonderful job from the moment they came to our home for our initial meeting through the final walk through of the work! They presented us with design options that were totally suited to what we described as our needs. All of the White Crane staff we worked with with highly experienced, professional, prompt, courteous and responsive. The design staff provided wonderful options for all of the materials and accessories and the project manager was at all of our meetings and coordinated and executed the project on schedule and within our budget. This is the third time we have worked with White Crane and have always found their work to be outstanding and their coordination, communication and consideration during the remodeling work made the process a pleasant experience! We have a gorgeous new master bathroom and love everything about it!"

"I contacted Mattson Macdonald Young (MMY) after receiving an email from our local city building inspector who wanted to ensure that a proposed greenhouse was in compliance with the 2020 Minnesota Residential Code. MMY Engineer Ken Green was extremely helpful in this matter and suggested that I contact the greenhouse kit manufacturer to obtain the needed information for the city. He also provided me with the applicable design loads for snow and wind so that the resulting greenhouse structure would be building code compliant. The greenhouse kit manufacturer upgraded its structural components to meet code. While I ended up not requiring MMY’s engineering design services, based on my interactions with Ken, the quality of the information that he provided to me and his prompt responses, MMY would be the first company that I’d call should I need these services in the future. I was truly impressed."

"Peter is very thorough with every aspect of his work. He worked with me and my husband to design a deck that would suit our <br /> needs, complement our house, and stay within our budget. We were very pleased with the results of the project and love our new deck. Being a structural engineer, we were extremely confident with his expertise. A safe and attractive deck was paramount for us. He did run into an issue outside his expertise and he guided us in finding another professional to correct it. We can't speak highly enough on our experience with Peter, and would hire him again. <br />"

"Highly recommend and excellent person to work with!! Responsive, detailed, honest, and does the job right. We had a complex job of moving our staircase and adding a basement window. Staircase required structural engineering and was a project many people turned down as they felt it was too complicated. In addition, he cut a 5’x4’ + hole through foundation to add a window. He was priced well, and did excellent work. We can’t recommend him enough and look forward to completing more projects with him!"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Minneapolis, MN

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
