"  My husband and I have a perplexing situation that perhaps someone can shed some light upon.  About 14 years ago we built our home and we had gas heater installed in our garage. The cost for installation the heater hooking up the gas line and thermostat cost around $400.
This fall we noticed that the pilot light was not on. In the past when we had any problems with our furnace we called Smith and Sons heating and air-conditioning and received excellent reasonable service. We knew that Smith and Sons heating had been purchased by Bassett services so we called them and arrange a service call.
The Basset service man check the unit and determined that the thermocouple was operating but we had a defective gas valve. He called his office to check on the availability and price of a replacement gas valve Honeywell VS 820. We were told that a replacement gas valve would cost approximately $750 without any guarantee and was non-returnable. He said that it would be more reasonable to replace the entire gas heater. The service man arrange fora Bassett consultant to come and give us an estimate to replace the heater.   We received an estimate from Bassett for a new replacement heater- H25N, adapt to same gas line, reconnect to existing thermostat, test and fire unit. The total cost was $2175 including tax.
We may be old and retired, we are not stupid!
My husband researched online and found a Honeywell the VS820 Powerpile Gas Valve for $99.45 including shipping.
He also found several H25N infrared garage heaters( exact replacement )from prices between $275 and $330. With free shipping.
Included in our estimate were several Angie's list super service awards along with several BBB complaint free awards. Our question is does this seem reasonable. 
This makes me fill less confident with using Angie's list.  I hope anyone using Bassett services will get more than one estimate!

"The only problem, and it was small, tiny problem. They was 15 minutes late to the appointed time to start. But that was due to the mis-spelling of the street name on the paperwork. The young men apologized and thanked me for my service in the military. I had my Navy Veteran hat on. They both shook my hand... That is always nice to hear and to appreciate. After showing the young men where the unit was. They helped me move the portable dog fence,so they had enough room to work and entrance to the furnace ( heat exchanger). They worked until about 12:30 and let me know that they needed more acetylene to continue to connect the new piping. And they would "grab something to eat" and would be right back. They was back within 30-40 minutes. That was fast to get everything and be back on the job. Normally I would think at least an hour to do all that. EXCELLENT!!! They continued for another 90 minutes or so. They then shown and explain all the work that was done. Showed all the new electical connections and piping. Making sure that I understand what to look for any leaks from the heat exchanger piping. After I was satisfied with work, equipment then they gave me the paperwork for the payment. By the time I wrote out the check they had the old unit, old exchanger loaded in their truck. They swept the area of the furnace. And they reposition the dog fence in the original spot. "Now how long does it take to write out a check?" They had everything done and running. Top Shelf Comfort heating-air conditioning -geothermal done an outstanding job. "LEE HAAS WAS PROMPT IN SHOWING UP FOR THE ESTIMATE AND THE INSTALLING CREW (BUDDY & DOUG) WERE NEAT AND SHOWED UP PROMPTLY AS WELL. THEY DISCOVERED THAT NOT ENOUGH PIPE WAS ORDERED & HAD TO RETURN A SECOND TIME TO FINISH INSTALLATION. THEY WERE VERY GOOD ABOUT LAYING CLOTHS TO PROTECT THE FLOOR & CLEANED UP AFTERWARDS."
