"These are the most unethical and unprofessional losers that I've ever had the misfortune to hire. I was told $600 (verbally) for the total job and it ended up being a lot more. The two individuals who delivered the bench made it clear they didn't want to hear what I had to say about being lied to. Just sign the form and accept that I got screwed. Avoid these losers at all costs. They are unethical and have no problem lying. I wish I could give them less than one star. One star is too high for this absolutely dishonest crew who didn't care what I had to say. They just wanted to leave and screw someone else over."

"We were extremely pleased with the workmanship. I did not rate for responsiveness because we were in no hurry to have the work done due to other ongoing remodling in the our house and so we told them to take their time. Nevertheless, when I went to get it, they did a superior job and were standing by to help me wrap it (it was raining) and get it loaded safely in my pickup truck. The piece is an antique oak mantel that is very complex. It had been previously refinished with a polyurathane and had some damage (screw holes and some broken wood carving) everything was stripped bare, repaied and refinished with high quality materials. All the previous damage was repaied and made invisable unless you know exactly where to look for it. We were very impressed with the work and would recommend Cather’s very highly. The picture shows the mantle where I will be putting it, but I have not yet installed it."

"Mr. Torres was great to work with. He was very quick to set up a conference and provide me with an estimate. The estimate was reasonable and he was able to get the project done the next week even though he ran into some problems that were no fault of his own. Once the front porch steps were removed from the house, he discovered that the builder had not done a good job. The builder had not tied the steps into the house and had used cross beams that were not wide enough to provide ample support. That was why the steps always felt "spongy". He explained all of this in a way that made sense. He offered several solutions to the problem and when I asked what he thought was the best solution he told me and explained why it would be the best. It all made sense to me. The additional cost for materials and labor was reasonable and he had the steps completed the next day. My front porch feels secure and sturdy. I have no doubt these steps will be here for years to come. Mr. Torres was polite, professional, fair, and made everything easy to understand. I plan on doing some other home improvements in the next 6 months and Mr. Torres will be the person I call."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Richmond, VA

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
