"I worked with Alpha once before, and they assisted with a second project 2 years ago which, now finally completed, I'm able to write a review about. Alpha helped with structural plans for windows in a garden level unit in order to prepare the proposal for city approval. Alpha is a big company and it took them a little while to complete everything; however I can certainly say that the engineer and contact people were knowledgeable and thorough. The plans were approved with their help and now that the unit is permitted for occupancy, the windows are a lovely attribute to the space."

"Butel is an excellent general contractor and I would recommend them for any renovation or home construction project. We have used them several times, from relatively small projects like enclosing a porch or refinishing floors, to major renovations like a new master suite and a basement conversion that required major structural remediation. Miguel (field super) is friendly and quick to respond to questions by text. Prices are fair, and they do not nickle-and-dime you with change orders. Workmanship was excellent. We are very happy with the work and will use them again when it's time for the next project."

"I had a great experience with Shenon Construction. Tom has a great personality and is easy to work with. I had almost my entire house remodeled from the floors to the bathrooms to the driveway. Everything was done well and with skill, like the tiling and painting. Compared to others that I worked with during the remodel, Shenon Construction was the most accommodating. They helped me find other people when needed for some specific items. Adam, the project manager, was good at communicating throughout. I was renovating while living in a different state and felt that I could trust their team and was able to meet and see progress throughout. Anything I was not satisfied with, they addressed. It was a great experience overall, and I would recommend Shenon Construction to others."

"We had our 30+ year-old deck rebuilt, and the experience was fantastic! From the start, the team worked closely with us, patiently refining designs and offering expert advice. Once finalized, they got to work right away, building a rock-solid structure designed to last for decades. They used high-quality materials, secured it properly, and even added custom dog ramps for our pets. The finished deck is beautiful—exactly what we envisioned. The team was professional, efficient, and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend!"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in San Pedro, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
