"Rusty did another terrific job for us. He refinished a sizable section of our kitchen cabinets; - the quality and finish were terrific. He also replaced the door hinges and drawer slides with soft close ones. He was very considerate of our schedule. Will call on him again next time we need refinishing or other furniture-related services."

"I have used T-n-T Refinishing for 2 projects in the past year and have been extremely pleased with the quality of work done, turnaround time and price. I had a bad experience with another refinishing company in the past and was hesitate to try another. When I took my table to T-n-T's place of business, I asked to see other work that they had done. David was very patient in showing and explaining projects that were in his shop and I decided to have him do my table. We were extremely pleased with the final product and, as a result, decided to have him refinish an antique piano also. We will not hesitate to take other projects to David and highly recommend to others. The cost for the table was $250 and the piano was $1700."

"<blockquote> <hr /> The furniture was picked up the day I called.  Bob even picked up the fabric from Blanks when it came in to save me  <br /> a trip since I word every day.  He then delivered the finished product by the date promised.  Everything looked so beautiful <br /> better than when it was new.  I can't tell you how pleased I am. <br /> <hr /> </blockquote> <br />"

"I was given an appointment window between 4 -6:30 PM. David arrived shortly after 4 and in a matter of minutes had the recliner completely taken apart. He removed the broken springs and clips and replaced them with furniture webbing, put the chair back together, and left the floor cleaner than it was before he started. All in slightly more than an hour. Who says Doctors don't make house calls? These guys do the work in your home so no trying to move bulky furniture out the door and into the truck you rented or borrowed, then waiting weeks for it to be fixed, then wrestled back through your front door. A great value, and experience, in every way. Don't bother looking any further. Call Dr. Furniture. You won't be sorry! <br />"

"I've used Mike Dowell's services before and this was another great job. This time my young son had accidentally broken an arm off one of our dining room chairs. Mike fixed it quickly and at a fair price. I dropped off the chair and picked it up at his shop. I don't know anything about wood working or carpentry, but the place was neat, clean, and very well organized. It's an unassuming place and easy to miss -- it's actually a unit within a corrugated metal mobile container in a corner of a recently developed townhouse/ condo development in a corner of Bel Aire on an edge with a state park (state forest?). If you go up some of the back roads coming from Baltimore it's actually a quite pretty drive for some of it - it follows a stream through park and farm land. <br /> In any case, I anticipate calling on Lauer Furniture Restoration again in the future.  <br />"

"Called for an appointment and they were very helpful and responsive. The person sent to my house was punctual and professional. The piano was so out of tune that it had to be tuned twice and they didnt charge more than they initially said they would. Note: I am writing this after the fact so dont remember the exact cost but it was reasonable and I will use them again."

"Overall, we had a wonderful experience with Dovetail Restorations. After my initial inquiry, the owner Todd arranged an appointment to view my kitchen table and chairs to provide me with an estimate for services. He suggested that the base of the table and four chairs could be cleaned up rather than undergoing a refinishing but agreed that the table top should be fully refinished. Within a week, we had an estimate for the work. We decided to proceed with the services. Dovetail Restorations is extremely busy so we had to wait about 3 months before the company could pick up our table and chairs and begin work on them (we were so grateful that Dovetail provided pick-up and delivery services for an additional fee). After picking up the table and chairs, Dovetail completed work within 4 weeks and returned the items to us. The table and chairs look brand new! We were so impressed with the quality of the work and are grateful to Todd for his advice about 'cleaning up" the base of the table and the four chairs. That decision saved us more than $100 a chair. Todd also arranged to have table pads made for our dining room and kitchen tables. We deferred to him for color selections and he did a fabulous job. We highly recommend Dovetail Restorations."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Shady Side, MD

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
