"BENCHMARK CONTRACTORS never fail to deliver! I absolutely love the work they did installing my new Hardy Plank Siding. Hardy Plank can be a pain to put up because it's heavy AND fragile. The guys worked 5 days a week from 9:00-4:00pm breaking only for lunch. First, they removed the 25 year old wood that had rotted in some places on the house. Then they repaired the exterior wall siding over the fireplace. All the old guttering was removed from the house as well. New insulation was installed on the house. The guys followed Hardy Plank Siding guidelines during installation, making sure the siding stayed dry and free from moisture. During this time, I noticed a neighbor was also having her siding installed and in 2 or 3 days it was complete (and it didn't look so hot). BENCHMARK CONTRACTORS installed my new siding over a 2 week period. They took their time because quality matters to these guys. Quality of work is always more important than speed. That's what I love about these guys. You might pay a few extra bucks but the end result is ALWAYS worth it! I took several pictures of the exterior of my house and posted them. One look and you can tell my guys are professionals. Several months after my siding was installed, I drove to the old family farm in eastern Iowa. As luck would have it, I secured a beautiful set of old French doors from the farmhouse just before an upcoming demolition. I brought the doors home, leaned them against a bedroom wall, then called John Butler from BENCHMARK CONTRACTORS. I explained to John that I hit the jackpot and now I needed a hole cut in my bedroom wall to install these awesome French doors! Naturally, several questions come to mind whenever someone wants to cut a big hole in the wall. So John came to the house to check out the doors and assess the project. John indicated that the French doors were interior doors...but I wanted to use them as exterior doors (going from the master bedroom out into the back yard). I could visualize how beautiful these doors would look once they were installed in my master bedroom. Desperate, I looked at John and said, "do whatever you need to do John, but can you just make them work? Please???" And John Butler from Benchmark Contractors did just that! First the guys had to remove some of the new siding (sorry about that guys) and cut a new hole in the wall. I didn't have the original door frame, so they had to construct a new door frame. They installed the French doors and, in order to make them work in the bedroom, they added a set of custom made winter storm doors. The screen doors were made to match the narrow French doors. The paint on the exterior of the storm doors matched the new trim paint on the exterior of my house. I was totally pleased with the quality of the doors and the entire installation. The cost of the James Hardy siding for my house was $11,000. BENCHMARK CONTRACTORS installed the new siding and they built and framed-in my French doors from the family farm for $9,450. They siding is top quality and so was the installation. I do not anticipate ever having to replace it again. If you want average work, call your regular go-to guy. "There were some challenges along the way,so we'll start with the overall experience:
Youngs completely gutted the kitchen and hall bath in our house.  The original scheduled time for the project was 6 weeks from the beginning of demolition to the end of construction, final touch up stretched a bit after the 6 week
time.  At the end of the project the kitchen and bath were beautiful and we felt like we ended up with what we were hoping for.  The final quality of the kitchen and bathroom were top notch.  The kitchen cabinets were very good quality for full wood semi-customized cabinets and the team at Youngs was willing to make minor adjustments to them to give them additional functionality.  Their designer took the time prior to starting the project to make sure the details were organized.  She made suggestions and always kept our personal style in consideration.  We really enjoyed the design process with Elizabeth.
Youngs remodeling was always considerate of our time.  They were willing to work with our time schedule and continued to be flexible in scheduling depending on our needs.
Security was never a concern and we felt 100% safe in our house during the entire process.  We felt very comfortable with all the sub-contractors utilized.  
Now for some of the frustrations:
We repeatedly asked for Youngs to provide a detailed scope of work that matched or referenced the design drawings.  The ?contract? provided to us prior to starting the work was lacking in detail and didn?t even have a signature line.  This caused us quite a bit of hesitation and we think Youngs really needs to address this concern.  However, due to generally positive reviews, we decided to proceed with work with them and at the end of the process are satisfied with the final product. 
Communication was lacking a little during the project to us.  There was an online schedule set up for our project and would have worked well, until changes happened.  Once the schedule needed to change, the online calendar was not always kept up to date so we did not know if there would be work happening at the house on that particular day or not.  We often had to initiate the communication rather than being kept up to date.  When we initiated the communication, we were always able to reach Youngs.
Additional challenges included a couple kitchen cabinets and accessories that did not arrive with the original shipment.  Unfortunately, it took two additional shipments to get the full order which really impacted our schedule.  Youngs did try to make up this lost time and almost finished by the deadline of Thanksgiving.  Although the kitchen was generally usable by that date, they had to return several times after Thanksgiving to correct some wall finishes and other touch up.  We were required to point out several defects in the construction (pitted drywall, pull outs not closing correctly, hidden junction box, paint touch up) in order to have the issues resolved.  While we realize that Youngs may not be able to catch all the items, there seemed to be too many that we the homeowners had to be responsible for in order to have any resolution.
The last frustration stemmed from the invoicing process.  We had some total costs higher than originally agreed upon and we had to go through several iterations to get the correct final due amount.  It did finally get resolved, however it took several weeks to do so.

"It all ended well - AHS decided to replace the furnace (19 years old) instead of the pricey part. It was a long process, though, during the hottest part of the summer. Communication between AHS and the vendor was not good. The vendor and I were both calling daily for status, having to wait on hold for 20-40 minutes before getting a person. However, the people we spoke to at AHS were very friendly and helpful. Call backs were non-existent, though, which would have been more of an issue if results were not seen. I am just grateful the 3 weeks without the furnace was during the uncomfortable summer as opposed to the bitter cold winter. Bottom line is - it got done, but it was long and drawn out. At this point we've gotten more out of the program than we put in, but I am thinking the inconvenience isn't worth the difference. The cost of service below is only for the service call - our annual AHS is about $1800."
