He shut it all down and drained tank. I called when I got home over a month later to schedule replacement. Not sure it was a great price; I only got one other estimate because I really wanted to have the same company who installed original, and it was still under warranty. I knew I could trust him. The other estimate was lower, but I am satisfied with my decision, His price was very close to his estimate and he was very professional. (I can't speak for the quality of a water heater that does't even last 5 years)"
