A brief while later, one of his teams were redirected to our home because their assigned job went more quickly than expected. "I used this company for minor plumbing issues a couple of times and found them to be professional and helpful, so I agreed to their annual service contract that includes tune-ups on the furnace and A/C.  My A/C unit is 20 years old this year; when serviced by another company last year, I was told it was in great shape for a unit of its age.  This year, Golden Rule told me that two parts needed to be replaced, totaling around $800; they assured me I shouldn't spend that on a 20-year-old unit and should let them give me an estimate on a new A/C unit, especially in light of rebates available this year and the discount Golden Rule would give me under the annual contract.  .
There was something about the service person that triggered my "distrust" sensor - too much of a sales vibe.  After the visit, I called the company and shared my concerns.  They had a more senior "service" person come look at the unit, and he agreed with his colleague's assessment.
The service call was in May.  It's now late July, and the A/C has been working fine.  Today I paid another reputable company to do an annual tune-up, without mentioning what Golden Rule had told me.  He said everything looked fine and it was running well.
This may just be a difference in approach; I realize that a 20-year-old unit could fail at anytime and some might want to replace it just based on age.  But today's service call didn't find any parts that needed to be replaced.  I can only assume that Golden Rule was looking for a way to justify selling me a new unit.
