Small jobs welcome

"Cody did a very good job of repairing and sealing my driveway. His pricing came in much lower than others who had a minimum charge of $1500. It took a few calls to coordinate a time to do the work, but you can tell he takes pride in providing a good service."

"I began working with XtraCare through the RiverSmart homes program, when I contacted them for a quote to refinish my NE DC rowhouse backyard with permeable pavers and replace an unstable retaining wall. Due to the cost of such a project, I did not hire XtraCare at the time. As a number of other reviewers mention, stonework is expensive, but you understand why when you see how hard the crews work and the scale and weight of the materials involved. After talking with a few other contractors to decide on a less expensive project scope (gravel instead of permeable pavers), I contracted XtraCare for an estimate - and to my surprise, they gave me the best price and a great design. XtraCare did an excellent job with the project - they used high quality materials, and the crew worked hard and had a good attention to detail throughout. They even got the job done despite COVID shutting down the regional economy towards the end of the project. I also appreciated how communicative and responsive XtraCare was throughout the process. We did have one hiccup when they switched my project manager and an important detail was missed, but they corrected the problem promptly and switched me back to my original manager (Cleber, who I recommend highly). I definitely recommend XtraCare."

"They did a difficult job well. They replaced our old patio with new pavers, expanding it to come to both sets of steps on our deck. They installed new French drains and dried creek bed, going around or under previous drains. They extended the drains from the roof to join the drain to the road. They poisoned and removed invasive plants. Due to the lateness of the year, it is a little too early to see how well the new French drain will work longer term or removal of invasive plants, but it's good so far and it looks good! The price was good and they worked hard and quickly."

"Ground Effects planned, permitted and built an outdoor basketball court which included the goals, a mid court net for racket games, lighting, and retaining walls. Josh and his crew continue to amaze me with their professionalism, skill and quality. I'm a pretty picky customer, and they never let me down. All materials were high quality, and were installed in accordance with manufacturers instructions and best practice. Ground Effects has done other projects for me over the years, and none has failed or needed significant rework or repair. The pre-construction panning help, including local jurisdiction approvals, was also outstanding. I would highly recommend Ground Effects Landscape Construction for any size project."

"I would highly recommend Hemax! We hired Hemax in August 2018 to fix water leaking into our basement in a house we recently purchased. After receiving multiple quotes, Hemax was not necessarily the cheapest, but they were by far the most thorough and easiest to work with, which was well-worth the money and peace of mind. To address the water problems our house had, Hemax removed an old concrete patio that was sloping toward the house and causing water to pool against our foundation. They repaired the foundation wall (by digging 33' long by 7' deep) to expose the foundation and install metal lath/waterproof the foundation. They also installed an exterior drain and sump pump (with a battery back-up system) in our basement (we previously did not have a sump pump). Hemax also extended our down spouts to improve drainage and keep water away from our house, in addition to installing a french drain where water was pooling in our front yard. The crew was extremely professional and Henry was always available to answer our questions. Since they completed their work, we have not had any water issues at all, and we are looking forward to hiring them again for all of our future exterior home projects."

"Wonderful work, very professional, and cost competitive company. 3-years later no issues. Kevin and his team came in to put a nice flagstone staff 8x45 ft patio in next to our house to replace the grass. It was completed quickly and when there was a minor issue that cropped up within 4-months due to bad stones from the quarry, they came back to replace asap. 100% confidence and would hire again. Thanks guys!"

"This spring, we were returning clients of Green Lady Masonry and Drainage Solutions. This is our third set of projects to be completed by Deborah, Gerardo, and the Crew. I cannot say enough on how professional the entire crew works. They are always polite, and they have always cleaned up the site every day without fail. First, we completed a front-yard makeover which included installation of a terraced mortared, Fieldstone retaining wall for our sloped garden and underground PVC pipe downspout installation. Before this, the landscape was overgrown, and years of poor drainage contributing to foundation and soil erosion. As in all subsequent projects, the professional planning and personal attention provided by Deborah and Gerardo allowed for easy execution of a gorgeous, finished product. The second project involved waterproofing a persistent leak in our foundation. Gerardo immediately knew the solution and the issue was handled efficiently with excellent outcome. Our latest work included a much-needed French Drain and extended PVC Pipe to deal with our always sloped, soggy side yard. Gerardo is ingenious in his thinking as he approaches problem-solving for water problems. He is also extraordinary in relation to designing retaining walls and other hardscapes. He created a lovely half-moon, mortared Fieldstone retaining wall in our backyard on a very steep slope that allows us to garden now."

"I am very pleased with the entire process working with Salzano Custom Concrete. With this being my first cement project, I truly appreciated the communication when I had a question or change in color/pattern. The entire Salzano staff was informative, thorough, and flexible from the first estimate to the final product. Everything looks great! Thanks again!"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Arlington, VA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
