"In my little three bedroom condo in San Diego, was packed more artwork and knickknacks than any human should own. I had a week's time to move in, and I had zero assistance in making it happen, AND I had to work. So, basically, I was screwed.
I leapt onto Angie's List and found Meathead Movers + Princess Packers. Being a marketing person, the name immediately drew me in as ridiculous and amazing. Also, the concept ? these are college athletes that are putting themselves through school, and they ?walk, don?t run?.
I called and asked to have someone come out and survey my place so that I could get a more accurate estimate of cost. Every other moving company I had met with was late, didn?t call until they were ?en route? and after the hour had passed. Torrey arrived on my doorstep at exactly the time scheduled!
Thank you for caring about my time! I know I do.
We did a very pleasant walk through; Torrey was very professional, funny, kind. He handed me some very fancy looking collateral that had packing material pricing, more on their company, etc. Everyone is licensed and bonded, blah-blah, everyone will treat your stuff like it were their own, blah, blah, etc.
He told me he would have an estimate to me that afternoon, and HE DID. Another miracle. I signed the contract and we were off and running. Two Princess Packers would be coming on Friday. Three Meathead Movers, on Saturday to haul the lot.
I received a text with photos of my Princesses?turns out, I was getting Man Princesses. Kevin and Nicholas. They also showed up exactly on time, to the minute. We did a walk through to assess what was going and what was staying, etc. They literally ran, grabbed boxes, and started packing. Packing like I have never seen. They were so crazy respectful and delightful, I
wanted to call their mothers and congratulate them.
They worked tirelessly. I have so much stuff, and although it looks reasonable when you step into it, once the cupboards start opening, look out. They worked a 10-hour day, and were going to keep going. In fact, not only did they pack, but they were also moving stuff into the POD. There was some misunderstanding (in my favor). They thought they were supposed to pack and
move me 100% that day. So I get an apologetic call from their supervisor who gives me a discount because they screwed up, and gave me greater service than expected. I was furious??
Mind = Blown.
The Princess?s go home, and the following day, on time again, I get three Meatheads, Kevin still leading the pack, although I was down a Nicholas. Such a sweet group of guys. They moved like lightening with crazy heavy furniture, paintings, you name it, it was hauled.
Then Kevin comes to me while I am cleaning, and says: We couldn?t get everything in, come take a look.
I go downstairs and I have to come back upstairs because I am no crying. I start scrubbing the floor. I literally can?t even. I can?t even!
Kevin retrieves the pile of Sylvia and hugs me and says, everything is going to be okay! We are going to do everything we can to get those things in. And for the most part, they did. The last two things, I could live without. Unlike the last time I packed one where we just threw and shoved things in and slammed the door shut, where half of the crap arrived broken on the other end? when you have a professionally packed POD, things are actually packed with the intention of arriving safely, and thus take up more space.
Well, I?ll be damned.
Meathead Movers + Princess Packers is a kick-a** concept, and a company that exceeds all expectation and across the board. It is my goal in life to get them into Portland, Oregon. If you are in San Diego and need a move. THESE ARE YOUR PEEPS.
Stay classy, San Diego.

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Cima, CA

Refinishing often only costs about half of what you’d spend on a comparable new piece and lets you keep the character you already love. Beyond the quick savings, you’re also cutting waste and avoiding the higher price of quality, brand-new furniture. For most homeowners, it’s a budget-smart and sustainable win.

Refurbishing preserves the original finish—think deep cleaning, tightening joints, and minor repairs — to refresh the piece without altering its appearance. Refinishing is more dramatic: Pros strip the old finish, sand, then add new stain or paint for an entirely new color or sheen. Both approaches improve appearance; the right choice depends on how much change you want.

Furniture that is severely worn, damaged, or made from fragile materials such as plywood, particleboard, or MDF is not suitable for refinishing. Items with significant structural issues or heavy deterioration often fail to achieve a quality finish, even after extra preparation. Select pieces with robust construction to ensure lasting beauty and durability.

Refinishing can affect the value of an antique piece. Serious collectors prize the original finish because it shows a piece’s age and craftsmanship. Stripping that patina can lower market value. If the goal is resale, talk with an appraiser or restoration pro before sanding anything. For heirloom pieces you plan to keep, a careful refinish may still be worth it if it protects the wood and lets you enjoy the furniture every day.

Water-damaged or swollen wood is often repairable. If the swelling is mild and hasn’t warped the structure, a pro can dry the wood, sand it flat, fill any cracks, and seal it before applying the new finish. Severe water damage that has twisted or split the frame is more challenging—and costly—to repair and may necessitate partial replacement. Let a refinishing specialist assess the piece first.

Acrylic paint is a top choice for most wood furniture because it applies smoothly, adheres well to primed surfaces, and cures into a tough, long-lasting finish. When you prep correctly—clean, sand, and prime—you’ll get even color that stands up to daily wear. For outdoor pieces, choose an acrylic formulated for exterior use to add extra UV protection.
