"We required a report from a structural engineer on the cracks in our house for a mortgage refinance. Jeremy was able to squeeze us into his schedule at the last minute to accommodate our lender's short timeline. He gave the house a very thorough inspection and spent time with us to explain the issues in detail. We highly recommend him!"

"2 words.... Smooth ride. I can't express enough truly how great of an experience this was. I have good experiences with previous contractors but not like this one with Meir. I didn't feel pressured into making decisions, he was willing to work with me on the price (because I wanted everything high end), and I was constantly updated with the status of the project. I highly recommend working with this company and Meir. Thank you again for your outstanding work. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"Emad was unwilling to provide a written report of his findings—why? My guess is he doesn’t want to stand by his findings and/or he’s lazy and doesn’t want to. Either way, not someone you want to use as the basis for an eval of your house’s structural integrity when purchasing a home. He charges $400 for a “verbal” report with you—-useless when you are going thru escrow..."

"Contractor Home Builders provided my husband and I with excellent and high quality service. When Max from CHB came to our home we had already received estimates from 10 other contractors. For various reasons related to pricing and products those contractors were not able to meet our needs. CHB was able to give us what we wanted in a timely and efficient manner. When CHB’s staff showed up to work the arrived in a timely manner and eager start working. They were all friendly, professional and courteous. They cleaned up after themselves and completed the entire project as scheduled. They installed a beautiful pavers stone driveway, a drought resistant landscape with drip irrigation and a mailbox enclosure. Since the installation was completed our neighbor and passer-by’s have been complementing the appearance of the work completed by CHB. My husband and I highly recommend CHB to do your job! Good luck and ask for Max. He is amazingly smart and knowledgeable as I am sure everyone working for CHB probably are as well."

"We received quotes from several other contractors who either charged too much, or said we couldn't add a second story. We worked closely with Shawn from start to finish and are incredibly pleased with the workmanship. He was patient with our questions and concerns, and all of the back and forth that comes with making big decisions involved in a home remodel. He's responsive and knowledgeable -- and continues to be -- even as the project has come to a close. It was a long process (15+ months) to add a second story above our garage and completely remodel our living area, garage, and kitchen; this included tearing down walls to increase our square footage, but it was definitely worth the wait. As others have noted, the pace of work hit some snags due to torrential rains and permit issues, but all things that are outside of our control. His team of workers are efficient and do quality work. We're pleased with how everything turned out and are amazed at what feels like a brand new home."

"Dan and his crew were amazing from the first meeting on. Always on time, did the work that was promised and did everything professionally. I would highly recommend them for any repair, or remodel needs, in fact I am letting my realtor know and she can recommend them for her current and future clients."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Desert Hot Springs, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
