"I emailed Sam Nigro at Dudley Services Inc. in the am and within an hour, I got an answer back. He said that he could stop by that same day at 5:00pm to take a look. Mr. Nigro on time, took a look at the foil backed board, and said he didn't think the board contained asbestos. He was very knowledgeable about when it became illegal to use asbestos in houses, and thought that 1947, when the house was built meant that the board probably contained another safer fire proof material.
On the other hand, Mr. Nigro cut a small sample of the board, put it in a zip lock bag, and told me that the material was different enough from anything he had previously seen-- that it would be good to have it tested. Mr. Nigro said he could take it to the local testing company, or I could. I said I would, because the testing company was located in an area I drove to often.
Mr. Nigro informed me of the cost of asbestos abatement for the five reflective boards backing the recessed steam radiators, if  asbestos were found in the sample. Mr. Nigro explained how each of the radiator areas would have to be cordoned off, etc.., and gave me a price for the removal.  Mr. Nigro asked me to let him know the result as soon as I got it.
I was prepared to hire Mr. Nigro on the spot, if the sample came back as positive for asbestos content, as he has a great demeanor, is kind and considerate, and easy to talk to. He gave a good description of how the possible asbestos abatement would proceed.
The next morning, I took the sample to the testing company and within two days, I got the great news that it did not contain asbestos. As promised, I emailed Mr. Nigro, and I asked if there would be at least a consultation charge. He said, "No charge."
