"James Builders built a new garage, shingled my roof, and installed new siding. Definitely the most professional contractor I have worked with in Maine. Always prompt and never hesitated to contacted me about issues or changes. Also, all work was spelled out in a contract and a payment schedule was clear and laid out ahead of time, which is much appreciated."

"They did a great job - were quick to call and schedule, arrived on time and worked fast, and offered to also do the garage for a little extra money.  All of the "gunk" they took out of the gutters was taken away.

"We hired Robert West to address some water-damaged siding and trim. He and his crew did a great job quite efficiently. It was a good experience from start to finish. Robert is professional, prompt, courteous, flexible, and his rate was very reasonable. I really appreciated how Robert shared photos of the progress along the way. We will definitely be working with him on future improvements."

"We just can't say enough in praise of John Cole of Backdraft Custom Build. Our experience with him was excellent and wholly successful. He arrived on time, he worked hard, he worked quickly and with confidence that experience brings. He has all the tools and he knows how to use them. No matter what curves the job presents, he knows how to navigate them. He quotes a price the average working family can afford, and he sticks to it. He's a nice guy, he's polite and easy to get along with. He makes the entire process a breeze for the customer. My wife and I were stressed out about our project. We worried about price, materials, time and having a stranger in our home. But these worries disintegrated with the professional service John provided. These days a lot of contractors have the "you need me more than I need you" attitude, and the bloated price tag to go with it. We are so happy to report none of that with Backdraft Custom Build. We have found our "go to" contractor and we will give him all our work projects moving forward. We'll never call any other builder again. Does your family have a building project you need done? We are proud to wholeheartedly recommend this talented craftsman to all our friends and neighbors. You will be delighted with John Cole from Backdraft Custom Build! FAQs for garage building service projects in Farmington, ME

A well‑constructed, properly permitted detached garage adds between $12,000 and $36,000 to a home’s resale value. Buyers appreciate the secure parking, extra storage, and flexible workspace, so appraisers often bump the property’s value accordingly. The exact return depends on the garage’s size, finishes, and how well it matches the main house, but most homeowners see a strong ROI when the build meets local codes and passes inspection.

Yes—once it meets local building codes and you secure the proper permits, a detached garage can be converted into living space. Finishing the interior, adding climate control, and ensuring safe egress effectively increase your usable square footage, though it may not always count toward the official listing. Skipping permits can trigger fines and even force you to undo the work, so always clear plans with your city first.

Most homeowners policies cover a detached garage under the “other structures” provision, but coverage limits vary. Review your declarations page and ask your agent how much protection you have for separate structures. If the limit is lower than the garage’s replacement cost, you can raise it for a modest premium. Confirming the details now prevents headaches if you ever need to file a claim.
