"In renovating our beach cottage in Warwick, RI we found the roof needed structural work. Building inspector required a structural engineered plan. Adam was easy to communicate with. He was timely with his plan and follow up inspection. He was also available by text and phone for questions during the project. He was great to work with!"

Customers say: Quality work

"Was having a potential home inspected for structural integrity. Spoke to Bob on the phone a few times. Since the home’s basement primarily consisted of a giant crawl space, I was told Don would do the job. Ultimately, the day before the scheduled inspection, I couldn’t get ahold of Don. Bob said Don was “feeling sick,” so the job was off. Frustrating, but a blessing in disguise because we ended up going with Colonial Restorations (the home was built in the 1800s). Colonial Restorations, LLC is the “go-to” for older home inspections and repairs. Tom was amazing (his son Brad is soon to take over the business)! They were both prompt, professional, and thorough. Very pleased with their work and thorough report/estimate. Colonial Restorations, LLC PO Box 868 Fiskdale, MA 01518 508-735-9900"

"After an unusual situation arose at my home, I was concerned about the possibility of structural damage caused by drilling and new construction at an adjacent lot. After receiving a recommendation for Veitas Engineers from a trusted source, I called and scheduled an appointment. I am so thankful that I did. I continue to be impressed with the amount of time that the two engineers spent at my house, closely inspecting the exterior and interior. Within days, I received a 16-page detailed report which included drawings, photographs, recommendations, and action items. I was so pleased when I saw that the action items were categorized as structural and non-structural, that is, that the engineers included items beyond my actual structural concerns. I used the report when working with a contractor to follow up on the recommendations and action items. The contractor was impressed with the quality, clarity, and scope of the report. I am so happy that I chose Veitas Engineers!"

"All the work was done well and we were very pleased with the results. We were always asked for our input, to ensure we were satisfied and to determine if anything else/different was needed. They even helped get us a heavily discounted price on the purchase of the doors; way below what we originally expected to pay. We plan to use MR again for any renovation work we may need!"

"LaLiberte was recommended by our structural engineer. They did a great job working from plans done by the structural engineer, and coordinating all permits and sign-offs by the town and the engineer. Extremely professional, good natured and clean. The price was reasonable. I would highly recommend Laliberte Construction, and certainly would hire them again if I needed this kind of work. We are all set with a house that will pass all inspections when it comes time to sell."

"This was a very large project  and complex requiring many heavy timbers, hydraulic jacks, and some real innovative solutions to structural problems. It went extremely well. The jacked up the roof, section by section, removed the old timbers as needed and installed all new. <br /> <br /> It took many weeks and in the end we were both very impressed and quite satisfied with the result."

"I was determined to come up with a prioritized, cost-effective plan to make the older section of my house retain heat better. John is great at evaluating problems and coming up with creative and effective solutions. Although his services are expensive at $175/hour (but I have not even considered calling around to get hourly rates of other engineers so his prices may be exactly in line with the local, going rate), his due diligence and detailed reports are invaluable. Following his instructions outlined in his reports to resolve problems has always resulted in success. I wanted a plan for this issue that I can implement in small increments. I felt that paying his hourly rate and coming away with a concrete plan prioritized to get the biggest bang for the buck would be well worth the initial pain felt in my pocketbook. John is professional, great at follow-through, very willing to brainstorm solutions, and good at thinking outside the box to find creative solutions to difficult problems."

"My house is over 100 years old. In the basement there was a side beam (not the main beam) that had a huge split running straight through it. It looked pretty bad and being that its a structural issue it concerned me a great deal. We bought the house knowing about it and that it would have to be dealt with eventually. I also had some splitting starting to form on the main beam running the length of the house. Wasn’t bad, but wasn’t going to get better without intervention. I found Beam and Structural Repair’s website. Aside from being appropriately named, they had photos of jobs they had done that looked way more challenging than what I needed. I called them. I spoke with Walt. Walt came out and assessed the situation, told me my options and gave me a quote within 24hours. We scheduled a time. Walt’s team came out and fixed it no problem. They weren’t invasive and definitely seemed to know what they were doing. They replaced the split side beam and installed plates and joist supports to prevent further splitting or sagging. They also replaced a temporary column with a permanent column. In my opinion they did a fantastic job. I would definitely hire them again, but to be honest, I hope I won’t have to. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Haverhill, MA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
