"I originally hired JW last year to install a new subfloor in one of my bathrooms. The crew was punctual and very professional. Once they began demo for the floor, they noticed significant rot under the tub and were able to add that repair to the scope of work for a reasonable price. I was very satisfied with the quality of their work. On the strength of the bathroom work, I hired them again early this year to do some framing and install sheetrock in my basement. As before, the crew was great -- very professional, kept me informed on what they were doing, and delivered very high quality work. Couldn't be happier. On a more general note, it turned out that I had the opportunity to speak with the owner (Jesse) a little bit after the work was complete. I was impressed by his professionalism, accessibility, and commitment to JW's customers -- values that seem to be consistent throughout the organization. Would recommend and use again."

"This was very easy to schedule, they were very responsive.
I was pleased that the walls were touched up and sanded prior to painting, I didn't realize how much they needed this. The overall finished product is great.

"It went well and there were no issues. They were average, but it was a great deal. They got back to me when they said they would, it wasn't a really quick process but they did contact me within the time frame they said they would. I did call them because I had a few questions and while they did answer the questions I asked they weren't incredibly helpful. It was a good price for a good product."

"Once again from beginning to end, Robert and his crew did an excellent job. The entire process went smoothly and the work was of good quality. We are very happy with the cabinet he made for us and the bathroom cabinets which were refaced have never looked better. Painting was also done well. Finally, the new faucets, shower head and towel racks were also installed without any problems. We would gladly call Robert for any future work as he has always delivered an excellent product."

"We hired MW for a renovation of our 1950's Colonial that included a new kitchen, family room, master bedroom suite, and porch – as well as a remodeled bathroom. After interviewing 3 contractors, we chose MW based on the competitiveness of their price as well as their willingness to think out of the box when it came to our project. Many of the contractors that do this work have a blueprint that they like to follow verbatim – and we wanted our renovation to be unique in a number of ways. The project was done on time and according to the milestones in the budget. Change Orders were created, negotiated, and discussed professionally and in good faith. MW honored their warranty and even extended it due to a manufacturer defect with our bathtub that cracked 2+ years after installation. We greatly enjoy our newly renovated home and regularly get compliments from guests."

"George was very professional when we first dealt with him and did a satisfactory job.  However, when we wanted him to do smaller jobs, he did not respond or set up dates to come and then did not show up nor did he call.  His father, who is the actual owner of George's Painting, came to our house for an estimate to have 3 closet shelves installed (the metal mesh type) for hwich he wanted $650.00.  We thought that was entirely too much as the material cost less than $100.  We looked for someone else off of Angie's list and got an excellent person who only charged $200 which was more reasonable and on top of that did an excellent job.    In addition we are having numerous other things done at reasonable prices.  Had I waited a bit longer, I could have gotten my house painted much cheaper as well.  George is overpriced and does not respond when you call or will he make an appointment with you and then not keep it.  I am glad I found someone else who is capable of doing what we want, is professional, does excellent work and his price is more reasonable.    I have already had work done by this other company and we are very satisfied.

"Everything came out beautifully. He is the contractor you are looking for, trustworthy, honest and responsive. He truly wants you to be happy and takes a lot pride in the quality of work his crew does. I have already recommended him to a friend, who was also very happy with the quality of work and the price paid. In addition I have also started another project with them to repair rotten wood around windows, cleaning gutters and installing gutter guards on the outside of the house. He will be our go to contractor for any more future projects."

FAQs for carpentry framing installation projects in Helen, MD

Professional contractors complete basement framing in three to five days, depending on the size and complexity of your space. Projects with simple, open layouts progress faster than those with multiple rooms and corners. DIY framers should expect the job to take significantly longer, potentially seven to 10 days or more, depending on experience level and available time. The timeline doesn't include other aspects of basement finishing like drywall installation, electrical work, or finishing touches, which extend the overall renovation schedule.

Most municipalities require building permits for basement framing projects. These permits cost between $1,200 and $2,000, ensuring your renovation meets local building codes for safety and structural integrity. Working without proper permits can result in penalties, forced removal of completed work, and complications when selling your home. Your local building department can provide specific information about permit requirements, inspection schedules, and any special considerations for basement renovations in your area.

For basement framing, use pressure-treated lumber for bottom plates (the horizontal boards that contact concrete floors) to prevent moisture damage and rot. Standard kiln-dried lumber is suitable for wall studs and top plates that don't directly contact concrete surfaces. The most common lumber dimension for basement wall framing is two-by-four, though some situations may call for two-by-six lumber to accommodate thicker insulation. Always check local building codes, as some jurisdictions have specific requirements for basement framing materials.

You can install drywall after framing is complete and inspected, but several important steps should happen first. Ensure any electrical, plumbing, or HVAC rough-ins are completed and inspected before closing up walls. Installing insulation between studs is highly recommended for temperature control and moisture management. Drywall installation adds an average of $3 to $4 per linear foot to your project, with painting costing an additional $2 to $6 per square foot. Address any moisture concerns before enclosing walls to prevent future damage and mold issues.
