"Frank has finished two basements for me and my family. If we ever did a 3rd, he'd be the 1st call I'd make. He does outstanding work - from design, implementation, clean up, affordability and everything else. You couldn't ask for anything better."

"We initially reached out to JRB Renovations based on other online reviews and Josh's swiftness in replying. We ultimately hire JRB based on our initial design meeting, Josh's professionalism and apparent knowledge about what we were attempting to have done, and his competitive quote/pricing. Josh and team were easy to work with, always on time and communicative about any concerns, changes, or other remodeling thoughts as they came up. Our experience was unique due to the COVID-19 quarantine and shelter-in-place, but Josh continued to keep us informed about timing expectations and ensured we were comfortable with his team as they re-entered our home. Josh was on site most days and did the majority of the work himself with his assistant (other than contracted work like tile and stone counter top). The end results are great. The only thing we would do differently or next time is hire a residential design architect. This is not against JRB as Josh was very open to our design ideas and changes during the project, but having a clear blueprint and plan upfront would have helped."

"Fabulous. Mike repaired our foundation several years ago, and his work has held up over time. He is professional, courteous, and quick, once he was able to fit us into his schedule. When we needed additional work done on our house, we went to him first, and he was able to recommend other contractors for work he couldn't perform himself. <br />"

"Tom organized his tile specialist (Mary...who is great) to meet up with my mother-in-law. The tile was picked out and the project was on its way. After the walls were down Tom could see the damage was under the surface. Tom and his men treat the jobs like it is their home. He went above and beyond to make sure the job was done with a 100% perfection. My husband stopped over a couple of times. Not to inspect the job ... just to say Hi, because by the time Tom leaves your project you fill like you made a new friend. He was patient and took the time explaining everything to my 83 year mother-in-law which isn't always easy. She called us for three mornings in a row saying its like a new bathroom, she can't believe she cleaned that water off the floor for so long. We are already planning our next project with Tom (front porch)!! - Weaver"

"They did a good job. There were some issues with getting them to come back and finish a few items and check things but they did come out and it was eventually all finished. The salesmen were super nice and the workers cleaned up well."

"Everyone was very professional and skilled.  The owners did a great job of scheduling all of the different tradesmen and materials when needed.  The carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and flooring installers were hard working and highly skilled.  I know I never would have been able to pull all of this together myself.   <br /> The owners were flexible about expanding the job when I asked for additional features like extra lights and switches, electric plugs, and painted walls.  The new finished room took up about a third of my basement.  My job was bigger than some others because I needed all the old floor tile removed and new vinyl tiles installed in the whole basement, not just the new finished room. And I asked them to paint all of the concrete walls in the whole basement.  They did it all in two weeks.  Amazing.  They really do deliver impressive basements.  All of my family and friends just love the way my new basement looks now.  <br /> I am glad I found this company and I would recommend them to anyone who wants to finish or refinish their basement.  <br />"

"We finally decided it was time to remove an old brick propane grill from our backyard that had been a constant eyesore. I contacted Kurt and he came right out, quoted the price for the job and returned a couple of days later to remove the grill. Kurt has done projects for me in the past including finishing my basement, remodeling my bathroom and installing a kitchen floor. I have always been happy with his work and have referred him to family members that have also hired him. <br /> <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Highland Park, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
