"The repairman arrived toward the end of the assigned appointment window, sitting in his truck for 8 minutes before starting work. He examined the system and told me that the evaporator coils were iced-up, and he recommended that we let the system thaw overnight and have another repairman return the next day to add R-22 refrigerant. When I asked him if there were any other options he offered to run the heat cycle to thaw the evaporator coils and then he could make an assessment. After returning outside, I found the repairman running my water hose to cool the compressor, because it had severely overheated and activated a thermal relay preventing the compressor from running (he explained). I inquired about conducting a leak test, and the repairman said it would have to be scheduled another time for an additional charge. I declined the leak test and went inside my home while the compressor finished cooling. When I returned outside, the repairman had added R-22 without advising me of his intentions. Asking how much he added, he said it took two pounds at $95.00/LB R-22. I left and he continued to check the system operation. Working outside my home near my condenser I saw the repairman on his phone. As I walked up to him he told me that the condenser was not operating at the correct pressure and amperage and that he had only seen a compressor fail in this mode "once several years ago." Accordingly, he needed some advice on how to proceed. After discussing the impractical option of replacing the compressor for approximately $2000, he then offered to price a system replacement (without mentioning any need for evaluation or planning: SEER, cooling/heating requirements, square footage, insulation, ducting inspection, permitting, etc). Here is his official proposal that he squeezed into the end of his "DESCRIPTION OF WORK" section on my invoice: "$5746.68 CARRIER 4TON HEAT KIT AND PAD USE EXISTING STAT, STAND, Copper, drain and electrical." Before he prepared his invoice, I told him that I had an Angie's List coupon for $40. When he presented the invoice, it had 2 1/2 pound of R-22 added (versus the 2 pounds he had previously stated). I signed the invoice after discussing this issue, and the repairman departed approximately one hour and twenty-three minutes after he parked his truck. Issue 1: I never explicitly authorized the repairman to add R-22 to my system. Issue 2: After adding refrigerant, he determined that the compressor was defective. Could this not be detected before wasting refrigerant and my money? Issue 3: In the invoice DESCRIPTION OF WORK he notes: "As I added to 3rd lb [R-22] compressor over amped and STARTED clanking. Excessive oil" I suspect that severely overheating a marginally running compressor in a 12-year old condenser unit would cause further problems (apparently a compressor failure)."

"I went to Home Advisor to find reputable firms to provide quotes on a new Heat Pump and its auxiliary equipment. Much to my surprise, they recommended only two firms. Since I was aware that this project would cost $3,000 or more, I decided to not limit my options to just two firms. Since the unit I would eventually purchase was replacing the builder’s grade unit that came with my new home, purchased in 2004, I contacted the firm that installed the original equipment and the firm that maintained that equipment for 13 of the 15 years. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, Home Advisor must have a pending jobs listing that other firms can check periodically in search of prospective customers, and two other firms contacted me directly requesting a chance to bid on my project and I happily accepted. The equipment being replaced was a Lennox 3 Ton 10 Seer unit. The units quoted were: Comfortmaker, 3 Ton 17.5 Seer, variable speed heat pump system Trane, 3 Ton 16 Seer, single stage heat pump system. Lennox, 3 Ton 16 Seer, single stage heat pump system. Carriage, 3 Ton 16 Seer, two stage heat pump system. Daikin VRV , 3 Ton 16 Seer, Variable stage heat pump system. Amana, 3 Ton 15 Seer, single stage heat pump system. After investigating contractor reputations and analyzing the specifications and weighing advantages/disadvantages versus price, I determined that my best option was the Daikin VRV unit. The contractor, 1st Coast Climate Control, LLC, has a first rate reputation with the BBB, Angie’s List and Home Advisor. Their representative, Ed Kitchen, is an excellent salesman and installer. He spent at least an hour pointing out all of the benefits of this particular unit. Of all the units quoted, theirs was the only heat pump that would easily fit in the confined space that my town home unit provided for installation. Unfortunately, during Ed’s presentation my wife was occupied elsewhere and when she returned home she requested that I ask him to do another presentation, he graciously came out to our home again and went through his presentation so that she would have the opportunity to learn about the new equipment and ask questions as they occurred to her. Daikin, a Japanese firm, is the World’s Largest Producer of Air Conditioning Systems. While in the military, I spent four years in Japan, and I witnessed the work ethic and dedication that workers invest for their employer. You will not find a more conscientious group of employees anywhere. Since we are one of first families in this city to have this particular unit installed, the Daikin’s Territorial Sales Manager, Fernando “Tito” Quintana, was on-site during the installation. He was very enthusiastic and assured us that his firm was invested in ensuring we are happy customers. Needless to say, the installation went smoothly, Ed and his crew worked diligently and cleaned up after themselves, leaving us with a stable and pleasantly cool environment at the end of the day. We are more than pleased with our selection, the equipment is silent and runs smoothly maintaining a consistently comfortable environment."

"I receive 3 quotes from 3 local companies and Waycoff’s had the best deal and Rep. I would ask for Tracy if you need a new system. I bought a two stage 16 seer Bryant with all the bells and whistles. I also have online AC controls so that is why the higher cost. My humidity is kept at 56%. It really hits you when you go outside, it’s like walking through a humidity barrier. The installers were great also. The system comes 3 years parts and labor from Waycoff’s. Never had that offer before."

The problem was fixed appropriately and quickly. The price was reasonable also!! Thank you so much for the professionalism! We will definitely be using Williams Air if anything goes wrong with our AC system!"
