"Jill and her son stripped and refinished an antique Japanese tansu (stacked clothing chest) for me and far exceeded my expectations; they are true artisans!. The craftsmanship was very detailed and precise- with the repairs to some of the wood, customized stain and seal, hardware removal, repair, and reinstallation. They were perfectionists and we would not hesitate to recommend them and we would certainly use them again if ever we needed restoration work on another piece of furniture."

"Are you are wondering if it is worth repairing and refinishing some of your furniture? The answer is yes, YES, if you have it done by Better Than New Fine Furniture Repair. Give them the opportunity to breathe new life into a family heirloom or refashion an old piece as we did into something with a very different look and purpose. If you are as happy with the results as we have been you will agree your money was well spent. The first project we had them do was rather straight forward. We asked them to take some old wicker pieces we had and refinish them from dark brown to white. Having done this myself in the past I can tell you this is more work than you might think. They did a great job and the chair and rocker look fantastic and will give us many more years of use. Now for the second and much more difficult project. We had a rather large library piece that not only needed the color changed, from black to white but the piece had to be refashioned so it could be used for an entirely different purpose. At Better Than New Fine Furniture Repair you get the best of both worlds, good technicians (the finishes were nicely done) but also artists. Dan Oldejans, the owner, worked with us to take the initial piece, redesign it, replacing wood with glass and adding new moldings to bring the library up to date and allow it to serve an entirely new use as a room divider. All this was done at a fraction of what a new piece of furniture of this quality would have cost us. Before deciding to entrust our furniture to Dan, we looked at all the ratings and are so happy we selected Better Than New Fine Furniture Repair. Both projects we had them do for us could not have come out any better and we will not hesitate to use them again in the future. We were trilled and are sure you will be as well."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Phoenix, AZ

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
