"I needed a structural engineer for drawings for a deck, as requested by Pittsburgh. I called Kevin McLane who came over that afternoon for the paperwork he needed. Kevin called the next day and had all the drawings done and brought them over that evening. Because of a discrepancy on measurements we wanted Pittsburgh required additional drawing which again Kevin did within a day. I would highly recommend him for all structural engineering services. He seems quite knowledgeable along with being friendly and expedient."

"The engineer Bob came out to our house and performed an inspection of the exterior and interior of our house to detect any structural issues and to make recommendations on what improvements we can make. He arrived on time, was courteous in answering our numerous questions, suggested things such as adding sister joists to floors and the roof, and confirmed which walls were load-bearing for future remodeling. We accepted a verbal report for $400, but a written report is available for a little more money."

"The entire team at Engineered Foundation Solutions was amazing, from start to finish. Everyone was very personable and professional. Shannon at the office kept everything running smooth and communications were always polite and timely. The crew, Colin, Chandler and Randy worked extremely hard and never hesitated to give you their undivided attention. They took the time to answer any questions or discuss any concerns we had. We certainly felt comfortable welcoming them into our home. Despite some bad weather days, the guys left the work area clean and dry. We just can't say enough about just how great these guys are. This project was a big undertaking for us, Jeff and Bob are the main reason we selected them for it. The attention to detail, planning, and execution is evident from the moment you meet them, and carries through to the completion of the work. They set their own standards high, guarantee their work, and follow through. Engineered Foundation Solutions exceeded all of our expectations, and we are forever thankful for their knowledge, hard work and kindness."

"A friend recommended Rob at Inspectioneering and I can see why. He was very professional. Scheduling was easy and he was early for our appointment. I was present at the inspection and he was patient with my questions (and ignorance). He was thorough but not picky, which is helpful when you're considering such a big purchase. I think he did an excellent job and my husband and I feel like we can move forward with a clear picture about the condition of the home."

"Roy and his son, Chris from HOUSE & BUILDING ENGINEERING (HBE) met with us on site of the home we intended to purchase - a 100 year old home in Observatory Hill. They were very punctual, courteous and professional. They reviewed everything as required and more. The initial report provided by Chris  highlighted 7 different areas of the home and detached garage structure that needed attention. After discussions with the mortgage company Chris brought that down to 4 conditions that should be addressed. These conditions were addressed as requested. However, after the work was completed and reviewed, HBE would not sign off that the home was structurally sound. <br /> <br /> We requested contractors to provide quotes for the work that HBE then said was required to make the structure sound. We were quoted far above the numbers that HBE said would be the cost AND none of the contractors would do the work (all of who are listed on Angie?s List with high grades - as is HBE). The contractors all refused to do the work because the structural issues in question had been in that state since the previous owners moved in 10 years prior, and because if they did the work, they would do far more damage to the house. (I tend to back the contractors on this, whoever heard of a contractor refusing to do work, especially in these tough economic times?) So as a result of this, HBE never signed off that the house was structurally sound, and the work was not completed, so no mortgage. <br /> <br /> HBE did point out other issues that were resolved to satisfaction by HBE by a contractor. <br /> <br /> The price for the service was far above what was quoted, because of the extra work HBE did, however for the value of the service, I would only give a 5 of 10 since they never signed off that the house was sound after the work was completed as required in their report. The mortgage was never approved. <br /> <br /> To be fair PNC Mortgage had a hand in this not going through as well since the mortgage loan broker was completely incompetent and told us that the underwriter would approve the fixes to the property based on the revised report, even though he did not check with the underwriter prior to telling all parties this. However, had we known that HBE would not sign off on the home that it was structurally sound after the revised report was completed, we would have chosen a different route and not continued to use the services of HBE."

"Josh the engineer spent about 45 minutes to evaluate the foundation. He was on time and provided useful suggestions. This evaluation was not for a pending home sale, so he provided the recommendations verbally, as we had agreed."

"I was very happy with the job.  The deck is beautiful and the door installation went perfectly.  The contractor went to extra effort making sure all interior trim around the door matched existing interior trim.  He did small swatches of wood trim with different finishes to make sure staining matched.  The contractor was very helpful in deciding size and deck design and offered options and price variations on those options.  He was also helpful in answering all my questions about the pro's and con's of the options offered.  He further answered all questions regarding construction and care of the deck.  The contractors were prompt.  The job was completed in a timely manner and the workers cleaned up all debris. I have used Cratsa construction before and will continue to use them in the future. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Pittsburgh, PA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
