Customers say: Quality work

"Curtis Kuhn has created several custom furniture pieces for me (several are pictured in the pictures section of his company on Angie's List), including an entry way table, a shelf, a coffee table, and a cedar shoe shelf for our closet. His work is great, and he can deliver (and draw up) what you are describing from your head and inspiration photos. He's awesome...hope he doesn't retire before all my projects are done. :)"

"We hired ArtVitan to resurface and reface out kitchen cabinets and had them build out a custom pantry with appliance garage to help modernize our space. Additionally, we had a custom built-in bar cabinet and shelving and half bathroom designed as well. Deyman was professional, easy to communicate with and sketch out our ideas and delivered everything on time with quality construction, soft close hinges and drawers. We will be engaging them agin int eh future for our other bathroom cabinets in the near future."

"Based  on the reviews on Angie's List we selected Brad to totally refinish our custom kitchen cabinets as well as a built-in entertainment center in the den, two stairway banisters and our front door.  This refinishing process included stripping existing stain, sanding, staining and lacquering.  He gave us a very detailed bid outlining the scope of the project, estimated time lines for completion of the job, and the cost.  In discussions about the job, we were made aware of the what to expect during this process, which included the mess and inconvenience involved.  All the drawers and cabinet doors were refinished off site.  The cabinet bases however had to be done in place.  Our process included a penetrating  stain that was sprayed as was the lacquer finish.  I would recommend that any carpet in the areas where the refinishing will be done be removed prior to the start of the  process.  Since we are replacing the carpet this was not an issue for us. Because we were coordinating with other contractors, the job spanned a total of ten weeks.  Brad willingly accommodated the other contractors' time lines.  Brad matched the color we wanted despite the fact that we had at least four different woods which absorbed the stain differently and in some areas didn't accept it at all.  Being a perfectionist, Brad worked with technical stain specialists to bring out the beautiful grain in the wood and minimize color variations due to the wood.  He was very knowledgeable and professional and found a solution that gave us beautiful cabinets.  He demonstrated his willlingness to do whatever it took to satisfy us.  We would recommend him to anyone who seeks an exceptional cabinet refinishing professional. "

"

Laura and her team are wonderful people, and I felt completely safe leaving the house while they worked.  The color tips that Laura gave for accent walls turned out really nice.  I liked the way Laura and her team removed the popcorn ceiling, not scraping down to the sheetrock but leaving a textured ceiling.

There were some problems, however.

We had discussed that Laura buy the paint since she could get a discounted price; however, they sent me for paint while they were scraping the ceiling.

The painted cabinets look a lot better except for the fact that they also painted the hardware.  When cabinet doors were opened, paint scrapped off part of the hardware, leaving it looking a bit tacky.  They also did not paint the visible part underneath the top cabinet above the sink.

My biggest disappointment is with the woodwork.  They used latex paint over oil-based paint on the doors, casing the paint to bubble and peel.  When they returned to correct the problem, they primed and painted over the peeled part, leaving the outline of where the paint peeled.  My louvered closet doors were not removed and sprayed but painted while shut.  When the doors are open, the unpainted part is quite visible.  Two of the closet doors were painted along with the frame.  When the doors were opened, the paint cracked and peeled.

Although I grew fond of Laura and her crew, I would not hire them for interior painting again.

"Mr. White came to my residence, looked at my table top and made me a quote with a time estimate which I accepted. I had the table top loosened from the base so he only took the table top to do the job. Three days later the ice and snow hit. I expected the weather might slow things down so I waited a couple extra days beyond the quote time before calling. I was right, he was still working on my table but said he would have it ready in 2 days. He called me the next day saying the work was done and I had him bring my table top that evening. He had wrapped up my table top to insure it would wouldn't be damaged in delivery. The work was FAR better than I expected, he really is a "Wood Doctor!" I highly recommend The Wood Doctor for any and all wood working projects from wood funriture repairs, refinishing wood, to putting together wood furniture. You will seriously be impressed by his work and professionalism."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Plano, TX

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
