"The gentleman showed up on time and used a high pressure canister tool to force the crud from the drain. This wasn't the $40 tool you'd find on Amazon, but the plumber's professional version of it. He applied two treatments and thus far the drain has worked the best since we got the house 10 years ago. Part of the problem with a bathtub drain is that it can be a nightmare to auger - I have an auger and couldn't get it to make all the twists to get to the pipe. Note that you will be required to sign a waiver that relieves him of any responsibility if the pipes burst from the air pressure involved. This is not unreasonable, and I've seen plumbers wreck drains without telling people ahead of time it could happen. If the pipe's old, and that weak, a heavy auger could wreck it as well.
