Customers say: Quality work

"Was having a potential home inspected for structural integrity. Spoke to Bob on the phone a few times. Since the home’s basement primarily consisted of a giant crawl space, I was told Don would do the job. Ultimately, the day before the scheduled inspection, I couldn’t get ahold of Don. Bob said Don was “feeling sick,” so the job was off. Frustrating, but a blessing in disguise because we ended up going with Colonial Restorations (the home was built in the 1800s). Colonial Restorations, LLC is the “go-to” for older home inspections and repairs. Tom was amazing (his son Brad is soon to take over the business)! They were both prompt, professional, and thorough. Very pleased with their work and thorough report/estimate. Colonial Restorations, LLC PO Box 868 Fiskdale, MA 01518 508-735-9900"

"We had extensive work done by Marcello and his crews. They added a master bath, renovated a guest bath, added a back door and stairs, some new windows, opened up the kitchen and refinished the large basement. All the work was done within budget and of high quality. We highly recommend this company"

"LaLiberte was recommended by our structural engineer. They did a great job working from plans done by the structural engineer, and coordinating all permits and sign-offs by the town and the engineer. Extremely professional, good natured and clean. The price was reasonable. I would highly recommend Laliberte Construction, and certainly would hire them again if I needed this kind of work. We are all set with a house that will pass all inspections when it comes time to sell."

"I was determined to come up with a prioritized, cost-effective plan to make the older section of my house retain heat better. John is great at evaluating problems and coming up with creative and effective solutions. Although his services are expensive at $175/hour (but I have not even considered calling around to get hourly rates of other engineers so his prices may be exactly in line with the local, going rate), his due diligence and detailed reports are invaluable. Following his instructions outlined in his reports to resolve problems has always resulted in success. I wanted a plan for this issue that I can implement in small increments. I felt that paying his hourly rate and coming away with a concrete plan prioritized to get the biggest bang for the buck would be well worth the initial pain felt in my pocketbook. John is professional, great at follow-through, very willing to brainstorm solutions, and good at thinking outside the box to find creative solutions to difficult problems."

"Ross and his crew were wonderful to work with. He came and gave me an estimate on the same day that I called. He was very professional and definitely was very knowledgeable. He was able to give me a very fair and reasonable estimate and also provided me with paperwork with their license and insurance info. I had other contractors quote me $15,000 more for the same job, and other contractors flat out tell me no- that they didn't want the job or the job couldn't be done. Ross's crew came the next week and completed the job in 3 days. They were always right on time and the basement looks great. They also did an awesome job cleaning up afterwards. I was very impressed w this company and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. They stuck to the price that Ross had quoted me... That was a fear of mine bc I heard horror stories of companies starting the job and then "finding" additional thousands of dollars of damage. Cheryl was also a pleasure to work with over the phone. This company is very fair and honest, professional and their work is top notch."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Sharon, MA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
