"The consultant (Jeremy I think) was excellent. he was on time, professional, and engaging. He was able to tell within seconds that what we were looking for was not something the company did any more, but took the time to walk me through what we needed, how it should/could be done, and was even able to recommended alternative resources. outstanding customer service and will absolutely consider Andersen for future doors and windows."

"We have used Thompson Creek several times over the years. We have had new windows, new siding glass doors and new front door with a storm door @nd a new side door. They are professional and always clean up. The office kept us up to date as to when they would be doing the install. Very happy"

"The reason I downgraded them was there communication was very poor from the headquarters to the field staff. to me and then between the supplier and the headquarters. For example I ordered screens. The screens where never installed with the original window. I had called several time to follow up and it turns out there were a few screens that had come in but were damaged and no body communicated that to me so, I was waiting for 3 months for the actual think that I had already paid for. And then, there was a disagreement between the supplier and the provider which is when they-. The windows where great. The windows whee do. It just the service was poor. The pricing was great. They had a range of options and it was all on a cart so you could see how they customise your selections. That was nice. (Quality:) So far so good. I think I would probably rate them a B, mostly because the installation was not super tidy and again, the quality of the product still really needs to get tasted but the sound is greatly reduced and the lost of heat has been greatly reduced. But the actual way they installed it and the look of it is a little bit shoddy. (Professionalism): Its different because I dealt with a lot of people I guess. I deal with the person who was the sales person, and then I also dealt with the company. The sales person actually had a much higher lever of professionalism than the people that I dealt with in the headquarters, Thats why i'm a lot bit in between. They do send some follow up things and have tried to make some sort of amends. (Used them again) Hopefully I will not need them in the future though I don't anticipate following up with another provider for the same service. i only have 6 windows in the house this way. Yes I would compared rates and services with other companies, I would not automatically go back to them."

"When I bought my circa 1984 Reston town home 6 years ago, I didn't realize how many things were not "standard" size. When the Fairfax County Fire Department forced entry through my front door (due to a small fire next door) which caused me to replace both the door and the jamb, not even *that* door could be installed without serious tweaking and modification by professional door installers. Therefore, it came as no surprise that when something as "simple" as a sliding screen door on my deck, which was the wrong size to begin with, finally gave up the ghost entirely, the search to find a properly fitting and functioning screen door became a quest. Nothing HD and Lowes sold would fit. Nor were their employees vaguely knowledgeable. I found an on-line company that custom makes screen doors/windows to specification, but measurements had to be to taken (by me) to the closest 16th of an inch. Their on-line instructions were rather intimidating and the diagrams caused more consternation than confidence. Although I am capable of many home fixes, I was concerned that I would spend over $200 only to wind up with a non-returnable 32"x80" paper weight. My living room is small and most of the rear wall is comprised of French doors that look out across my deck and trees. I've always considered it a living painting and often thought a retractable screen would be most aesthetically pleasing, allowing the view to be uncluttered by screening, which currently was seen through one side of the door or the other, regardless of its position. Not to mention I had a high degree of concern that the door be absolutely bug-tight! I love to let the air in, but not bugs, which seem to have an affinity for both my deck and my person. If the screen door could not fit tightly enough to keep out the smallest of intruders, then I might as well seal the doors and treat them as windows. I called no less than 5 contractors/general handymen from Angie's List hoping to find someone who would take measurements, install and, if necessary, tweak a new sliding screen door. No one would touch the job. Too much trouble for too little money, they said. I found Tri-State by trolling the web. They had a "cicada special" in May. I called. Phone staff was friendly, informative, answered all my questions and allayed most of my concerns. It was more money than I had been willing to spend when I began my search two years ago, but after ending up at so many dead ends the cost was softened when I factored in their warranty, that they come and custom fit the door on your property and they will come out and address any problems for two years. I told Tri-State I had to have my siding painted before I was ready for the screen door, so the installation was finally done in June. I was told they would come between 8:00 and 9:00a during the week. They came at 8:15 and I was on the road to work in a hour. Carl and a helper measured my doorway, set up a saw horse and custom fit the door on the front sidewalk after plugging in their saw in my kitchen (no outlet at the front of my house). They installed the door jamb on top of the existing aluminum threshold. Carl showed me how to re-seat the screen in case some person/dog walks through it. Also, how to keep the tracks clean and lubricated with silicone spray (NOT WD-40). They left me a can of lubricant when they were done. The whole process was quick and painless and I wish I had bitten the bullet a few years ago. I'm very happy that I have an unimpeded view of my deck and trees 24-7 and I am looking forward to having my door open to the air while keeping the bugs out once the humid summer changes to autumn. <br />"

"Perfect from start to finish. Went to their website and filled out the work request, description of damage and our contact information. (We had a one day window for the work to be done because she was headed for school the next day.) Sent the request at 8am and within 5 minutes Trevor contacted me to let me know he could come by that morning. Bonus for us, we are in their service area. He promised to arrive by 9:30 (traffic willing). He arrived within the hour. The screen was replaced in about 30 minutes. Received my receipt and 6 month warranty by e-mail at 9:35. (Phew, because you just know she will break that screen again.) He was professional, prompt, friendly, and courteous. Truly a pleasure to work with. I cannot recommend CrackedMacScreen highly enough! <br />"

"I had a 10 year old computer that wasn't working correctly. Called Glacier and after telling Taha what the computer was doing he had me take some pics of the display and send them to him. Within an hour he was able to diagnose the problem from the pics. I dropped off my computer and by that afternoon he had it repaired! I also wanted him to build me a new high performance computer. After discussing what I wanted the new system to do he recommended components that resulted in a fantastic system that met my every need. And he did all this including repairing my old computer so it works better than before and building my new system all within a week. He even drove 30 miles on a Sunday to deliver the systems to my house and set them up. That's what I call service! Glacier is definitely my first choice for anything related to computers. You can't go wrong with Glacier or Taha."

"I requested estimates from two companies for the complete replacement of all roof shingles. It took one day to get an appointment with Shiner Roofing. The Sales Consultant spent two hours at my home inspecting and answering my questions, gave me a brochure regarding the shingles offered by Shiner, and gave me an estimate on the spot. The estimate included the replacement of 5 over-sized vents with ridge vents for attic ventilation. This was good because, over the years, wildlife entered the attic via the over-sized vents. Even though the vents were sealed with steel screens, wildlife would return and try to break through. My research indicated that the shingles offered by Shiner, along with its ventilation system, is tops among shingles. Regarding the other company from which I requested an estimate: It was a week before I could get an appointment, and another 3 days before I received the estimate. I was told the type of shingles that would be installed but I didn’t receive a brochure or other information regarding the shingles. And my attic vents would be upgraded with new vents. While Shiner was more expensive, I found the company to be top quality, they met my requirements, and did an excellent job installing the new roof and cleaning up afterwards. The only issue was that the company that delivered the shingles leaked some sort of fluid on the driveway. As such, Shiner had the driveway power washed to correct this issue. Overall, I found Shiner to be a top quality company."

FAQs for door or window screens install or repair projects in Washington DC, DC

Most off-the-shelf screens come in fixed sizes, ranging from 18 inches by 20 inches to 36 inches by 74 inches, which fit the vast majority of residential windows. If your opening falls outside that range or has a unique shape, you’ll need a custom screen built to the exact measurements. Going custom ensures a secure fit, a solid barrier against bugs, and a clean, finished look.

The decision to repair or replace your screen depends on the extent of the damage. Small holes or tears in otherwise solid mesh can be patched, and a sturdy frame usually doesn’t need to go anywhere. However, once the frame is bent or the mesh is brittle and fraying in several spots, replacement becomes a more sensible option—and often proves to be less costly in the long run. Take a close look at both parts before making a decision.

To rescreen a window, start by prying out the old spline, then lift the torn mesh from the frame. Lay the new screen over the frame, allowing about an inch of excess on all sides, and hold it in place while pressing fresh spline into the groove with a roller. Check that the mesh is taut—many pros rest a small brick on it while they work—then trim the overhang with a utility knife.

Most window screens last for 10 to 12 years. Time, sun, and weather gradually make the mesh brittle, so you’ll start to see sagging, rips, or thinning spots that let bugs get through. Check the screens each season; if the mesh crumbles or the frame warps, it’s time to replace them to keep air flowing and pests outside.

Most pros can swap out a screen in 10 minutes to an hour. A quick pop‑in replacement goes fastest, while fitting new mesh into an existing frame or working on a hard‑to‑reach upper window adds time. Either way, plan for at least a few extra minutes per screen so the installer can verify the fit and ensure the spline is seated correctly.
