"Tim came out on a service call and determined the coil on our lower unit was leaking slowly. After discussing options he repaired it as best he could. Replacing the coil on my current unit would have been expensive on a 12 year old system. We had him come back and give us an estimate on replacing both of our units as they were of the same age. He discussed exactly what he was going to do and answered all my concerns. Tim even gave us a discount for the service call, being retired military and replacing both units at the same time. Matt and James came out and were very professional, courteous and efficient in their work. They replaced both units (one for the main floor and one in a very hot attic) in 2 rather than the 3 days originally scheduled. Very happy with my experience with all employees with this company."

"Jim did a great job. He quickly assessed the problem and then took our unit with him to work on it more. When he got back to us, the fix would have cost more than it was worth. He gave us options for a new or refurbished PC. We felt the refurbished was a good deal and chose that. He came back and set that up and we are very happy with it. He then took a look at my laptop and again took it along. He tuned it up and installed a speed upgrade we wanted. Of course, we paid extra for the new unit and upgrades, but we thought the price was very fair. Jim seemed very knowledgeable and responsive. We will definitely call him again if we need any computer services."

"We are new to the area and had previously hired a â top-rated company to install our thermostat. Well...they did, but we had to hire another company to come and fix their error. Johnston was that company. Knowing nothing about them, it was a risk...having already spent money for the initial install. Yet we were out at ease with the initial 730am phone call that weâ d placed for service. The tech was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, answering every question that we had and walking us through the diagnosis/repair. Excellent service all around! Would recommend them any day."

"Overall, our biggest recommendation is to make sure you keep your invoice handy because the company may not remember what you paid for and what you did not. Also, if you opt for the three month sanitizing treatment, make sure that you keep a record of when your ductwork is due. You must call them for the treatment because they will not remind you. If you ask for a refund for services not rendered, they are not handled in a timely or proper manner.

"Tomas and his crew did a full double replacement of two zone HVAC system. Everything was well explained before and during the entire installation. They showed up right on time, were courteous and pleasant to speak with and finished the entire replacement and professional startup in just 1 day. I highly recommend contracting Vortex air for your hvac needs. You will get efficient professional service at a price that beats the large contractors in the central Virginia area."

"The inspection went very well. The technician called to inquire if he could come early and I agreed that would work for me. The technician was very professional and courteous. He found that our system was in good shape and not in need of any repair. We plan on scheduling them to come in the fall to inspect the system before old man winter comes calling. I also noted on their website that they provide duct cleaning services and we plan to schedule Johnston Heating and Cooling to perform that service for us as well."

"CHW was very responsive to our urgent need! We filed a claim the evening prior when we notices our A/C was blowing warm air into the rooms. Then by 8AM the next day, we had a call from the service technician saying he was on his way to address the issue! CHW worked with the technician to find out the compressor was the culprit and approved it's repair! Great customer service for a family in need during the hot south central Texas summer!"

FAQs for central a/c service or repair projects in Amherst, VA

A condenser fan motor is a crucial part of your air conditioner that prevents the compressor from overheating. It pulls heat from your AC unit to cool the refrigerant moving through the condenser coils. This allows your system to blow cool air and keeps everything running smoothly.

The most common causes of AC fan motor failure include loss of lubricant in the system due to overheating and a rusted or leaking run capacitor. Poor lubrication can also cause failure in the belt drive, which may impact the AC fan motor. Weather and electrical components can also affect your AC. For example, a storm could send water into your motor windings and damage the internal components.

Air conditioner fan motors last about 12 years on average, though they can last longer if maintained well. This includes keeping them clean and cooled as needed with annual air conditioner checkups. Routine maintenance is essential to catch AC fan issues early. An HVAC inspection can cost between $70 and $500, while AC cleaning services may range from $100 to $400.

A broken AC fan motor may need replacement because this part usually can’t be repaired. Several things indicate it’s time to replace your AC fan motor, including buzzing noises, a constantly running fan, unusually high energy bills, or an aging system. If you notice these signs, call an HVAC pro for help before the faulty motor starts to strain other parts of the AC system.

There are clear warning signs of a bad AC fan motor, including unusual interruptions in the fan operation. The motor might be malfunctioning if you hear weird noises like grinding or rattling or if the fan continues to spin when the unit is off. These indicators compromise your AC’s cooling performance and increase your energy costs. Addressing these issues immediately by contacting a trusted HVAC professional prevents further damage and safeguards your HVAC's efficiency.

Replacing your AC fan motor takes a professional one to four hours. The technician will start by assessing your system and safely removing the damaged motor. If a new part needs to be ordered, it might take a few days. Once the part is available, your pro will install it properly and make sure your system is running smoothly.
