"The plumber arrived in the first hour of the 3-hour window they'd given us. The situation was a little complicated, since our house is a hundred years old; there are three different gas lines running to different parts of the house, two of them unused, with no way to turn them off individually. The leaking valve was on an unused line that we might use in the future for a gas dryer. A gas company technician had found the leak the previous night, and had to turn off gas to the entire house since there was no way to isolate the leak.
The plumber went over a few options for repairs, listened well to my description of the situation, and answered my questions carefully and completely. We agreed that he would cut off the unused line above the leak, put in an isolation valve (so that we can install a dryer without turning off all our gas), and cap the line. Early on he realized that the line was a nonstandard size, so he had to return to the office to get parts in the right size. He came back quickly with an adapter to a half-inch line, so that future work could use standard parts. He finished the work, confirmed that there was no further leak, relighted pilot lights, and was done about an hour and a half after he'd first arrived.

He replaced the pipes and tested the system to ensure no more leaking. I called him back because subsequently, we noticed water leaking under the sink. He also noticed a problem that another plumber had created and promised to fix it when he came back out to work on the repairs to the house, which was extensively damaged.
