"Jamie came and-- - inspected the fireplace - pointed out several positive things about its condition - invited us to use his mirror and flashlight to peer up into the chimney - taught me to discern whether the damper is open or closed (I always found it difficult to determine this) - patiently walked me through the process of opening / closing the damper several times (I’d never done this before) - and pronounced our chimney free of dirt and pollutants. It didn’t need cleaning after all Jamie didn’t charged us a penny for his service call -- but we would have gladly paid for all the time and help he gave us. As he packed up his drop cloth and tools, we assured him he would be our chimney sweep the next time we needed service. He then gave us a special magnetized business card for the refrigerator. It had a dedicated place to write in today’s service date -- a small detail, yes, but such a practical one. Now I’ll always know when our last cleaning was! Thanks for all your professionalism, Jamie! That evening, my husband and I lit our first fire in over a year. It was so warming and comforting -- and we felt so sheepish for needlessly putting off having the fireplace inspected. -- In case you think Jamie is perfect, we discovered one detail he overlooked. He had not proofread his latest batch of business cards -- and his e-mail address was not correct. But having experienced his care in business, I’m betting he’s already called the printer and placed a corrected order."

"I was able to get an appointment for just a few days after I called. Hunter was on time, friendly and polite. In addition to cleaning our chimney he did some spot repairs on our roof. I will definitely be calling him again next time our chimney needs cleaning."

"Jim charged us for the visit because the pitch of our roof is very steep (it's a dangerous roof to climb). If work would have been done, he said we could apply half of that cost to the work. However, when Jim inspected the chimney from the roof and attic, he found an even bigger problem than we anticipated. He said there was a liner for our downstairs furnace -- but that the upstairs furnace was connected to the chimney with no liner and because of a metal plate at the top of the chimney around the liner had been completely blocked off, with nowhere for the furnace exhaust to escape. Obviously a very dangerous situation -- so we are so grateful he found it. He suggested that we contact the people responsible for this and insist they fix the problem. We can't thank Jim enough for finding this problem. We would definitely call him again for future services."

"DIY system is nice, but the monthly cost is not in line with other DIY systems. I would go with Ring or Simplysafe next time just because of the monthly cost. Overall the support is good, but that doesn't justify the monthly cost."

"Derrick was so professional and so knowledgeable about installing our wood stove into our coal fireplace. We had been given a quote from a competitor several months prior that was $2500.00 more. Also, I found out that the way they would have installed it would have created serious problems in the future. Great company!!!! Thanks for installing our wood stove. It is working great!!!! Derricks Chimney Service is the only company I will use in the future or recommend."

FAQs for chimney or fireplace service projects in Asheville, NC

Level one inspections take up to one hour and involve a thorough visual examination of the inner surfaces of your chimney. Level two inspections take about two hours and go beyond that with a look from the bottom to top to see if there’s any damage. Level three inspections can take days since they require the removal of building materials to assess severe damage.

A chimney inspection performed during a home inspection is a limited review that only highlights visible issues on the interior and exterior surfaces of your fireplace and chimney. This brief check does not cover in-depth structural or hidden defects. If there are concerns about chimney integrity or safety, a dedicated chimney inspection by a specialist is essential to identify significant problems.

Regular maintenance and cleaning of your chimney are important and must be performed at least once every year. Proper cleaning removes dangerous creosote and soot buildup that can cause fires and expose your home to harmful carbon monoxide. If you use your fireplace often, scheduling additional cleanings is necessary to maintain safety. Hiring a professional inspector ensures that every part of your chimney is thoroughly inspected and cleaned, preserving its performance and protecting your home.
