"We were in the unfortunate position of needing to replace two HVAC units in our home at the same time. We learned that our son is sensitive to mold and found that our existing units, which were 15 years old, had mold in the plenum. "I purchased a 20 point inspection on Angie's List for my HVAC system as it was having issues cooling my home. We had multiple days in the low 80's inside the house. The tech came out and was very professional. He did his inspection and found the freon to be low and no other issues. He added 2 pounds of freon to the AC which was not included in the inspection, charged $40/lb.
He told me that it was probably a slow leak and that it should be fine. I'm not sure if finding the cause/source of the leak should be in the inspection, but I hope he's right. I could feel the air coming in from the vents cooling down significantly after he added the freon.
After he left, the strangest thing happened, the humidity on my top floor climbed up to around 85%. For about a week after the service I had humidity levels ranging from 70%-85% and it was quite uncomfortable, even though the air temperature was fine. After some research, I came to the conclusion that the additional coolant was making my system more efficient and therefore moving less air, resulting in more humidity. I made some adjustments to my thermostat settings and now we are usually around 60% humidity, which is acceptable.
I have no idea if the service contributed, or if it was due to the amount of rain we were constantly getting for the month of June, or a combination of the two, but it seems to be working fine now.
