"BUYER BEWARE: This company promises that they can handle the $800 Xcel rebate for installing a heat pump water heater, but have been unable to actually do so. In total, using this company cost us AT LEAST $1,050 over what we would have paid with a different installer. Explanation of where I got the $1,050 number (read on if ye be brave): When I first reached out to this company, they sent over Dan. Dan is great -- he has a good sense of humor, he speaks the lingo well, and he's quick to say yes to any questions (which in hindsight should have been a red flag). Questions like whether the company could handle the rebate offered by Xcel for heat pump water heaters. Questions like whether his company could hook up the water heater if there was a junction box nearby. He mentioned that they don't have electricians on staff, but that he could put me in touch with 'his guy' to set up the electrical before they installed the water heater. And here should have been red flag #2. Dan's 'guy' never responded. In fact, Dan didn't even send me the contact details -- I had to reach out to the All American Drain Cleaning office to get a number for a person that didn't reply. No problem; it's the modern day, and Thumbtack is a thing. I was able to find an electrician to install the new junction box within a few feet of the water heater. Cost for that was $566 (which I'm not including in my $1,050 number). Day of the install. A new installer comes over. Removes my old water heater, installs the new one. Everything is going well until he shows me what he's done. "Gee," I say. "It sure doesn't look like the water heater's been connected to that shiny new junction box over there." At which point he tells me that this company cannot connect electrical wiring. Fam. Fam. Now I would ASSUME that these people install a lot of water heaters. We went with the water heater that THEY RECOMMENDED. So why in the seven hells did they not inform us that we would need to bring in an electrician after the fact to actually wire the darn thing in? ESPECIALLY given that this left us in a position of either: finding an electrician to do emergency/day-of work, or going without hot water until we could find someone. We were able to find an electrician. But -- whereas the first electrician mentioned they would have thrown in the work for free if they'd been out there -- this rush job ended up setting us back another $250. Oh golly, you can bet that $250 makes it into my final $1,050 number. And by the way, I spoke with the installer to ask why he wouldn't at least tell us about the need for an electrician before he removed the PERFECTLY GOOD AND WORKING water heater, and he said it was easier to do his work without possibly rubbing elbows with an electrician. Ok, so water heater installed. Electrical wired up. It turns on and everything seems to be going alright. But here comes the real kick in the shins -- heat pump water heaters are expensive, so we'd like to get the paperwork for that Xcel rebate moving. I've called their office goodness knows how many times, but have yet to hear a peep about actual progress on the rebate paperwork. That's $800 I'm basically giving up on at this point. $800 + $250 = $1050. Thanks for listening to my TED talk."

Here at Tipping Hat Plumbing, Heating & Electric our focus is Good Old Fashioned Service. Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Drain Cleaning and Electric service that is done right, that will last and skillfully completed by one of our hard working, courteous service specialists.
"The service reps must be based on commission. I was told I had a leak in my coil without any proof and said that I either needed to replace my coil or replace the whole unit. The unit is only 5 years old. In addition, I was told that the rust in the tray of my AC unit meant I had a leak in the coil. The representative could not clearly explain what was wrong or prove what the issue was. Just a poor explanation and scare tactic warning me my AC unit would leak into my furnace. I decided to receive a second opinion. It is a good thing I did because not only would a perfectly good coil and AC unit be wasted, I would have way overpaid for a problem that wouldn't actually have been solved. The coils were vacuumed upon the work that was done and therefore it would be impossible to reach a pressure level with the vacuum process. I DON'T have a leak in my COIL. DO NOT USE Tipping Hat. I'm not sure if all their service techs are like this but if you incent for services through compensation it makes sense they will try to pull out all stops to get you to pay large sums of money to correct undiagnosed or incorrectly diagnosed problems. BE AWARE!!!!! I decided to"

"Wildcat Services, specifically D.C., helped me with a few projects. The first was adding wood paneling in my furnace HVAC room, and the second involved demolition and framing in my laundry room, which I was remodeling. D.C. did a fantastic job in both instances, and I’m happy to have worked with him and his team. I look forward to working with him again as new projects arise."

You'll need an expansion tank if your home has a closed water system, which is standard in newer homes or those with backflow preventers or pressure regulators. Expanding hot water has nowhere to go in closed systems, creating potentially damaging pressure. The expansion tank provides space for this expanded water, protecting your plumbing system and water heater from premature failure. Many local building codes now require expansion tanks, and some water heater warranties may be voided without one.
For a standard 50-gallon water heater, a two-gallon expansion tank is sufficient. This sizing assumes normal household water pressure between 40 and 60 psi. If your home has higher water pressure (60 to 80 psi), consider upgrading to a slightly larger tank for added protection. The expansion tank's purpose is to accommodate the increased volume that occurs when cold water heats up, which is proportional to your water heater's capacity.
Watch for signs like dripping water around the tank, fluctuating water pressure throughout your home, or unusual noises in your plumbing system. A properly functioning expansion tank should feel light when tapped on the bottom—if it feels heavy or waterlogged, the internal bladder has likely failed. Other indicators include frequent triggering of your temperature and pressure relief valve, visible corrosion on the tank, or unexplained increases in your water bill, suggesting hidden leaks.
Most expansion tanks have a service life of five to 10 years, though some may last up to 12 years or more with proper maintenance. Factors affecting lifespan include water quality, system pressure, installation quality, and tank construction. Hard water areas often see shorter lifespans due to mineral buildup. Regular maintenance checks can help identify potential issues before complete failure. When your water heater is due for replacement, it's wise to replace the expansion tank simultaneously, even if it hasn't failed yet.
A 30-gallon water heater needs an expansion tank if your home has a closed plumbing system. The need for an expansion tank is determined by your plumbing system type rather than water heater size. Even smaller water heaters create thermal expansion when heating water. If your home has a backflow preventer, pressure regulator, or check valve on the main water line, you have a closed system that requires an expansion tank. Check your local plumbing codes, as many jurisdictions now mandate expansion tanks regardless of water heater size.
