"Kristine diligently followed up with me and my wife to schedule an appointment and consult us on blinds for our new home. She went out of her way to call and organize appointment details over the holidays. Her consultative process is exactly what we were looking for - asking about the family, desired living/sleeping conditions per room and explaining various options based on look, style and budget. While our home purchase has been delayed, Kristine has given us confidence she will the best partner for us going forward.

"The initial meeting to measure and discuss the window treatments went very well.  Chris of ABC Windows and his father have been in the business for at least thirty years first in the Bronx and now in Tuckahoe, NY.
He was very knowledgeable about the area and the surrounding buildings and the nature of the light that my co-op receives.  I arranged for a visit to his shop where in a matter of a few hours I made my selections.  He guided me to the fabric and shade choices that enabled me to make a decision in one visit.  It was approximately six weeks from the date of my selection to the final installation.  Due to availability of materials there were two installations.  I am very happy with the results and would use them again if and when the need arises.

"Just OK. After they left we had a lot of flies in the house. We would kill 25-30 a day. They need to find a better way than to just open our house open for such a long tome. They also broke our blinds in one of our bedrooms and did not fix it or even tell us about it. We found out after they were gone."

"I chose them after finding them on Angie’s List. After contacting three or four other companies, they were the ones with the lowest price and offered the carpeting that was the most similar to what we had. The salesperson was very personable as well. The experience turned out okay.  It took about two weeks to have the work scheduled and they were able to complete the job in one day. What took me by surprise is that when they needed to cut the carpet to fit, they sprawled the carpet out on my driveway to do so. Part of my disappointment was how the salesperson who kept in good contact prior to the job did not come to look at it once it was completed. We previously had carpet down and assumed that it was flawless all the way through. When the salesperson came by, he did notice that there was an adjoined area. His installers did a pretty good job. There is one area where the seam is clearly noticeable. It was my intent to call the salesperson and have him come back and look at the work. However, I did not follow through.  Overall, I was just disappointed that the salesperson did not follow up and come take a look at the completed work."

"Overall - good quality work, organized, stress free process, a bit pricey but within reason. We had at least 4 or 5 companies come give us an estimate for the 10 windows we needed replaced in our home. Castle's price was not the highest, but also not the lowest. We wanted quality without breaking our bank, so we decided to go with them. The lifetime guarantee was also appealing to us. The sales pitch took a while, but he wasn't our first one, so we knew what to expect. Overall, the salesman was polite and respectful to us the whole time he was over. The scheduling / installation / payment process was almost all very stress free and smooth - they showed up when they were supposed to and worked very efficiently and mostly cleaned up after themselves. Their installers are very well trained. All ten windows were supposed to be done in one day. At the speed their installers were working at, it would have happened. However, they told us that 2 of the 10 windows we ordered came the wrong size and they couldn't finish the job that day (they send their people to come measure the windows.... so it was entirely their mistake). Though it was an inconvenience to us - we had to expect them a second day at our house - the correction was seamless and they took full responsibility for the mistake. We did not pay a penny more over this. A few notes - *The salesman said that the installation would be done completely from the outside of the house. That was not the case. Some of it was done from the inside. Some furniture had to be moved, etc... but again, they left minimal mess. *Strangely, as soon as the windows are manufactured and taken to their warehouse, they call you and can be rather pushy about setting an installation date as soon as possible without much warning ahead of time. That happened to us during the first installation. For the last two windows they were much more accommodating about our schedule. *We had an old bay window replaced with a garden window (much cheaper than a bay window) and though the window itself looks wonderful, they put new trim around the window, seems we are responsible for the sealing / painting of the wood trim and surface. The very same day they installed the windows, we were able to set our heater thermostat 1 to 2 degrees lower and still feel just as warm in the house - definitely proves that the windows are energy efficient. We've had the windows a few months now - all is well. Our only complaint is that in my son's room, where the heater and humidifier are on all night, on extremely cold mornings, there is some condensation on the inside of the window.... that's not supposed to be good.... we did not follow up on it with the company yet, but it only happened in his room a few times during the winter."

"After I approved the drapes, I was sent an invoice for $700. I paid the invoice. It's been over a year and despite numerous emails (over a dozen) with Amanda Zettel of Homemade Design, I still have not received the drapes or a refund. I was very satisfied with all of Homemade Design's work up until this experience."

"They did a pretty good job at a reasonable price. I am giving them a C for professionalism because they put us off for a week and used painters from another company. They had a tendency to take long lunch breaks and initially forgot their drop cloths. They had some problems at the start, but they did fix their mistakes. Mike, the boss, made some suggestions that turned out very well. The final product was cost effective and generally good. I found them on Angie's List."

FAQs for blinds or shades repair projects in New City, NY

If you're wondering whether repairing your blinds is worth it, consider the quality and age of your blinds. For high-end or custom blinds, repairing them can preserve their quality, functionality, and design, making repair a smart choice. Immediate repairs maintain the original look and performance. However, if your blinds are over six years old, extensively damaged, or of lower quality, replacing them might be more cost-effective, as new blinds offer better efficiency and modern technology. Weigh the repair costs against the benefits of replacement to make the best decision for your situation.

When damage undermines the integrity and appearance of your blinds, replacement becomes the clear option. You should replace your blinds when damage to slats or fabric prevents you from obtaining an exact match, thereby compromising appearance and function. Severe damage increases repair complexity and expense. Replacing blinds not only restores superior performance but also creates an opportunity for aesthetic upgrades and lasting benefits.

You should plan to replace your blinds at least every 10 years, with clear signs of wear, such as discoloration, deterioration, or functional issues, emerging by five years. Regular evaluation of style, quality, and performance supports an informed decision. While minor repairs may temporarily extend usability, a complete replacement secures optimal operation and updated design.

Establish a regular maintenance routine to keep your blinds looking and functioning their best. Clean them regularly with mild, specialized products and follow the manufacturer's recommended usage guidelines. UV-blocking window film can protect against fading and warping from sun exposure. Regular inspections and proactive maintenance will preserve their appearance and performance, extending their overall lifespan.

If you pull the blind string and it does not move, it indicates a malfunction in the mechanism, such as a broken cord, a jammed cord lock, or a stuck component. Inspect the string for breaks and examine the headrail for any obstructions. Replace the defective cord or cord lock as necessary to restore proper operation and maintain functionality.

Yes, you can replace your blind string yourself by using a replacement kit available at home improvement stores. Accurate measurement of the string diameter is essential for a perfect fit. Gather the necessary tools and follow the manufacturer’s instructions rigorously to secure a safe, lasting fix. If the task demands more time than anticipated, hiring a professional is advisable to avoid further damage.
