"The entire process was quick and efficient, from the estimate to the installation. The project was even completed 2 months earlier than expected. Communication was great throughout - we were never left wondering what stage we were at or what to expect. The door install was quick, as well, the installer was very knowledgeable and thorough. Very happy with this experience!"

"I can't say enough great things about Sy and SP Custom Carpentry!   They were our heroes when it came to restoring the original windows in our 1939 home.  We purchased the home knowing there was severe wood rot around the windows that needed to be taken care of.  We thought the windows were probably original to the home, and were interested in repairing them rather than replacing them.  I called and emailed several other companies that specialize in window restoration, and they all told me without seeing the windows that it would probably just be better to replace the windows.  Then along came Sy!  He was very responsive to my call and set up a time the next day to come over and look at the windows.  He was very quickly able to assess that all we needed was to replace the rotten wood surrounding 9 windows, and install new storm windows on 11 windows.  Additionally, we chose to have 2 windows fully reconditioned with new jamb liners and sashes.  We were very impressed with Sy's knowledge and experience and his "can do" attitude.  The team had all the work completed in 2 days and were polite, hardworking, and meticulous with their clean up.  The aluminum combination storm windows are fantastic, and we were extremely pleased with the end result!   <br /> After finishing with the windows, we realized we were in need of replacing the wooden screens for a screened porch.  Not knowing where to start with having custom screens made, I checked with Sy who once again came to the rescue.  He quickly came out to measure the screens, and had several ideas for how the screens should be made to avoid problems in the future.  In the end they made and installed 7 custom old style wood screens.  The porch has never looked better! <br />"

"The opening for our screened French storm doors is an odd size and we needed new doors with glass to keep the snow out in the winter. The custom-made doors are glass but also provide screen when the top glass panel is lowered. When the top panel is raised the doors can be cleaned from both inside and out without dealing with a screen. The doors are beautiful and functional and were expertly installed. We are very pleased."

"They did great work and we love the blinds. It was quite a bit of work and I spent more than I was thinking about. I spent $800. The salesperson came and he  showed us different layers and different styles for the kids room that we needed it for. We talked through colors and he gave me some ideas. The guy who came to install them was great and quick. So I was very pleased with the service and I would use them again. I have no bad things to say."

"The window washing went well. The crew was quick, clean and the windows were excellently cleaned. The screen replacement did not go well which prompted the company to send someone to repair the screen which was not installed correctly."

"Screen medic is awesome! I was amazed how they were able to take off our old screens (which were stuck to the window frames), build new ones right on site, and replace them within an hour or two! We're so happy to have new beautiful screens that are now easy to take off for cleaning. Very reasonable pricing, too. Couldn't be happier with this company!"

"This outfit is pretty sharp. First, we learned about C-H-I from Twin Cities Consumer Checkbook which gave them 100% quality rating with 67 reviews. We had a sliding deck door where the frame was broken and we knew we needed to replace it. We had builders grade vinyl windows in our 17 year old home and hated them because they were so drafty. Several windows had seals fail, another had hardware fail and two windows the blinds moved when the wind blew in the winter. It was time to replace a bunch of them and we opted to do all of them. We had seen countless ads for major window manufacturers from the Upper Midwest and were stumped on trying to select a brand. In our research, we found some advice that suggested rather than decide what brand windows to install, first decide who is going to do the installation. A good installer can make a mediocre window pretty good. A bad installation can make a really good window not so good. So, we started researching installers. Craftsmen Home Improvement was all A's across the board and installs all those major brands we had read about so we decided let the pro's suggest which way to go. The sales guy showed up and told us the most bang for our buck would be Richlin Windows made by the Hayfield Window Company in Hayfield Minnesota. It's an upper echelon vinyl window that worked best for our situation. No pressure at all. There was about 5 weeks lag time from signing the contract to work beginning. We had been told it would be 4 guys working 3 days. Instead it was 2 guys and 6 days but we were OK with that. Our sales person said we'd be able to keep our blinds (we hadn't even thought of that) but after the windows were installed, some of the blinds no longer fit. No problem. The blinds were trimmed and modified by the installers and we are looking good. The windows are guaranteed for life and the installation has the same guarantee. In fact, whenever we sell the place, the guarantees cover the next buyer's lifetime, as well. This review is written in July so we haven't been through a winter with the windows and new doors yet. We can tell you the windows are WAY quieter than the originals. Finally, the installers are people you'd want in your home. Quiet, fast, efficient, friendly and constantly cleaned up the house after each day. You could tell they cared about the job they were doing."

"Needed a cracked pane of glass replaced. They recommended that I bring it in for measurement for speedier processing. Since it was removable, I was able to do that. They made sure the glass replacement was going to match (low-E) as a mismatch is noticeable from the outside. Measurement took 10 minutes and I took the window back home. Replacement glass was there in about 3 weeks. Brought the window back in the morning and it was done by the afternoon. The price was lower than quotes from other places and the work was done well."

FAQs for door or window screens install or repair projects in Prior Lake, MN

Most off-the-shelf screens come in fixed sizes, ranging from 18 inches by 20 inches to 36 inches by 74 inches, which fit the vast majority of residential windows. If your opening falls outside that range or has a unique shape, you’ll need a custom screen built to the exact measurements. Going custom ensures a secure fit, a solid barrier against bugs, and a clean, finished look.

The decision to repair or replace your screen depends on the extent of the damage. Small holes or tears in otherwise solid mesh can be patched, and a sturdy frame usually doesn’t need to go anywhere. However, once the frame is bent or the mesh is brittle and fraying in several spots, replacement becomes a more sensible option—and often proves to be less costly in the long run. Take a close look at both parts before making a decision.

To rescreen a window, start by prying out the old spline, then lift the torn mesh from the frame. Lay the new screen over the frame, allowing about an inch of excess on all sides, and hold it in place while pressing fresh spline into the groove with a roller. Check that the mesh is taut—many pros rest a small brick on it while they work—then trim the overhang with a utility knife.

Most window screens last for 10 to 12 years. Time, sun, and weather gradually make the mesh brittle, so you’ll start to see sagging, rips, or thinning spots that let bugs get through. Check the screens each season; if the mesh crumbles or the frame warps, it’s time to replace them to keep air flowing and pests outside.

Most pros can swap out a screen in 10 minutes to an hour. A quick pop‑in replacement goes fastest, while fitting new mesh into an existing frame or working on a hard‑to‑reach upper window adds time. Either way, plan for at least a few extra minutes per screen so the installer can verify the fit and ensure the spline is seated correctly.
