"Within 5 minutes after Roy walked in, I knew I was speaking with an expert. He talked me out of wasting money on what I wanted (getting rid of boiler and replying on furnace) telling me about how everyone in the city during -40 degree nights was will freeze and if I keep the boiler I'll be comfy. He also talked me out of choosing a heat pump, saying in Chicago it will cause problems in the dead of winter and then I'll be out of luck. Initial estimate was only to replace the 60 year oil leaky boiler and 40 year old loud AC and furnace. Came in, did the work quickly, and when we were doing final inspection he pointed out where my last remaining original furnace was having problems. Gave me a great price to just get the the last furnace and AC done (AC was 40 years old). I know they won't be the cheapest but if you want someone you can trust who will guide you with his 30 years of experience and teach you the finer details of heating and cooling while delivering quality work, go with Porterhouse. I won't trust anyone else."

While I probably could have scrounged around for a slightly better price, the speed, professionalism and quality of the work more than made up for it - and currently being unemployed, I don't say that lightly! They literally came THE NEXT DAY and did the entire install - remove old unit, rework the ducting, install an air cleaner, dress the wiring - all in one day! The job was done with expert quality - no loose wires or hoses lying around, everything square - and they even came back a few days later to make sure the sump pump and humidifier wire working correctly. finally, they called me a week after that, to make sure I got the Peoples Gas rebate paperwork together! I'd recommend them to anyone!"

"Ryan from Shavitz came and assessed the problem, offering us a menu of options—we could have them seal the ducts for $ and/or we could have them install a ductless heat/AC system for $$$$. I asked Ryan what he would do if it were his home. He said he would go with the $ option, at least to see how much of a difference it made. I was impressed with his honesty, and we did indeed end up just sealing the ducts instead of spending a ton of money on the ductless system. The team was prompt and professional, and while the duct-sealing process did not solve the problem entirely—nor did anyone from Shavitz ever claim that it would—it did, as Ryan had guessed, make enough of a difference to keep the top floor reasonably comfortable. And it will save us a lot of money on our utility bills over time because the overall system is more efficient now, too. Great work all around by Shavitz."

"Initial estimate was scheduled with no problem, they took the time to answer all the questions I had about the furnace replacement. I received estimated from 6 other HVAC companies and American Family was basically the lowest, but I also felt comfortable with the level of knowledge and experience that was conveyed at the estimate. I scheduled the install and was a bit disappointed that the installers did not show until 10 am or so, but that was not a big problem as I had assumed the job would take all day. The job took longer than expected (past 7pm) and the installer wound up having to replace an entire part of the intake duct work that he did not expect to, but in the end the unit and ductwork looked clean and sturdy and well intalled. The owner called for a follow up appointment and he came in to look at the install and make sure all the settings were correct on the furnace. He answered any questions I had at that time. All in all a good experience with a good company"

"Jon showed up at 7:00 am on the dot, exactly 2 days after his initial visit to install my new 2 stage carrier furnace. The price included the materials to raise the unit, the necessary metal work for the ducts, and a new thermostat. The people who installed the first thermostat installed an incorrect one not suited for a 2 stage furnace. He removed and disposed of the old furnace and installed the new one without incident. Jon took the time to walk me through the use of a programmable thermostat and where to place the filters. My basement was left immaculate."
