"Sila was one of three companies I contacted for estimates on replacing my oil-fired systems with heat pumps. I have a boiler and two forced air furnaces, so the work would be extensive. I contacted Sila because their reviews were favorable, they sell Carrier products (which I was leaning toward), and they sell high velocity systems, which I felt might be a good option in the older part of the house where I don't have ducts. I was prepared to really go over the things that work well with ducts in the house, things that don't, and what my general asks were for the systems. The salesman was pleasant enough, but seemed completely uninterested in how I felt my current systems were and what my goals were. I asked for a price on two levels of Carrier (Performance and Inifinity) for the existing forced air systems, and then price me out for a reasonable high velocity system. The sales person who came out was pretty perfunctory and didn't take good notes while we spoke. I didn't think he was really that engaged in my concerns about the routing of high velocity ducting and placement--he just told me how it would have to be. While sometimes that's how things work, I don't think he really addressed my concerns with having all outlets in the ceiling only in the lower level, which would potentially leave me with lots of heat hanging around the ceiling. However, the larger issues were that the bids did not match the requirements for the project. First, he sent only the high velocity bid and nothing for the other systems. When i asked, he sent the other estimate, but only for the Carrier Infinity, omitting that I specifically asked for a bid on doing those systems with a Performance line that would allow me to use my existing non-communicating thermostats. In addition, their bid was the most expensive and their attention to detail seemed poor for a $40,000+ job. Spending less than an hour with me and sending lackluster boilerplate bids (with all kinds of language that should not have been in the bid, like references to other brands, etc.). A bid should be custom for the buyer and tailored for match what I'm asking for. This lack of attention to detail and customer focus lost Sila this job."

"

I own a house in Federal Hill that is currently tenant occupied.  The tenants alerted me that there was a gas smell in the kitchen, I called BGE and they came out, turned off gas, and BGE found two spots leaking gas, in the basement, which is under the kitchen.  They asked me to have a plumber check out, asap.  I went on Angie's list and received a call back from the owner of this company within 5 minutes ( it was around 8am on a weekday morning).  He was responsive, informative and really cared. He was at the property very quickly and found a leak at the piping for the hot water heater and also inspected the boiler, in which he said that it was time to get it replaced, and it was leaking gas, it was really old. He showed the tenants where the gas was coming from..He cemented the piping to the wall for the hot water heater.  He spent way over an hour with the tenants and another 45 minutes of the phone with me.  He also inspected the range and said he thought there might be a leak from the cable (which he was right), BGE did not pick up on that one.  He is very knowledgeable.  The range really needed to be replaced, it was old, and I ordered a new cable/range, when Best Buy delivered, they said they could not install, so I then called the owner of this company again, he was at an emergency repair, and he came by at 9:30 that night, after working another emergency repair all day, which was a sewer line, and installed the new range for the tenants. He had to then take apart the old range and haul it away because it would not fit thru the door.  I can not say enough how responsive and nice he is.  He really spent time making sure I understood everything, he is also a gas fitter, so he explained all that to me.  His costs are very very reasonable, I will recommend him to everyone I know.  I also called him about what kind of cable I needed for the new range when I was ordering it, and he spent more time going over exactly what I needed to order and what material was best. I called him again for advise when I was interviewing HVAC contractors.

"When installing the hot water bib the plumber drilled thru the wall and hit 2 wires. This was something I asked him to do while he was there. A check for wires prior to drilling in a hole would have saved me hundreds of dollars"

FAQs for gas piping projects in Friendship, MD

Plumbers with proper licensing and credentials install and relocate gas lines. When hiring a professional, verify they have experience with gas systems and all required certifications. Some homeowners choose to work with plumbers specializing in natural gas installations, as they have extensive experience with similar projects and understand the safety requirements.

The timeline for gas line relocation varies based on project complexity, permit processing, and inspection scheduling. The physical labor takes a few hours to one day, depending on the line length. However, the actual installation work represents only part of the overall project timeline. Your contractor should provide a specific timeframe based on your circumstances and local permitting requirements.

Your gas supply must be shut off during the relocation process. This safety measure prevents gas leaks while connections are being modified. Plan for this temporary service interruption by making alternative arrangements for cooking, heating, or other gas-dependent systems in your home. The shut-off generally only lasts for a portion of the work, often a few hours.

Relocating gas lines to connect new appliances is a common reason for this type of project. Whether you're installing a gas stove, fireplace, dryer, or outdoor grill, a professional can determine the best route for extending your existing gas system. The cost will depend on the distance between your current gas line and the new appliance location.

Gas line work is not suitable for DIY projects. Natural gas is highly flammable and potentially lethal if not handled correctly. Gas leaks can be difficult to detect without specialized equipment. Professional plumbers have the proper training, tools, and experience to safely relocate gas lines while ensuring compliance with local building codes and safety standards.
