Environmental Management Associates, Inc., is a full service environmental consultant and contractor. We specialize in residential and commercial services including oil tank removal and remediation. In addition we are well versed in mold assessment testing and mitigation. In business since 1994, EMA, Inc., operates with a pedigree of professionalism to satisfy their customers.

"EMA is definitely a very good and reliable company. Just had oil tank removed and although there were unexpected additional charges because of a small hole in tank, Mike was very nice and explained everything. Just wished DEP was not so strict because they cost us an additional $1900 even without any contamination. I picked this company because it had very good reviews not just for their professional service but they are a lot lower than all the other companies I looked into. Our first estimate was $1,400 more than EMA!! I called several companies and I am so glad I went with them."

It's true: A fuel tank will eventually corrode and leak. If you encounter a tank that is more than 15 years old, there is a good chance that substantial corrosion has taken place. Trust that Sterling will remove your tank with the utmost care for your property and will create a safe environment for your family. Call Sterling Environmental Services today!

"Sterlington Environmental removed my "ready to leak" 60 year old in-basement oil tank and replaced it with a clean, modern Roth tank in about half a day. This is an inherently messy job and they did it quickly and efficiently while paying attention to the rest of my home. The entrance to my basement is through the house and they laid down protective materials to protect my floors and were very careful not to damage anything or spill oil as they worked and moved materials, tools and supplies in and out of the basement. They also handled all the permitting and inspections. I hope to never have to do this again, but if I do, I will call Sterling to do the job. "

"Avoid this company at all costs. I hired them in Sept 2024 to replace oil tanks, and while they arrived on time, the installation was reckless?they cut through two floor joists instead of properly routing the fill line, compromising my home's structural integrity. They dismissed my concerns and promised a repair that never happened. Even if they had, it would only matter if it passed a home inspection. I?m now facing costly repairs, zero accountability, and the worst service I?ve ever experienced. Don't let Sal or his crew near your home."

"This past weekend I had a bad experience. The short story is that an A. J. Perri technician diagnosed my furnace problem and wrote me an estimate for $1,600, parts and labor. It turns out my furnace had a different problem that required no parts and only 15 minutes of labor. Here are the details: This past Saturday my furnace stopped heating my home. I called A.J. Perri and they sent out a technician on Sunday morning. The tech ran some checks and concluded that my “inducer assembly” had to be replaced. Parts and installation would be $1,600. He said someone from the office would contact me on Monday and let me know when they could have the part. He also said that he couldn't be certain that there weren't other issues that wouldn't be found until the inducer was repaired. After the technician left I did some searching on the Internet. YouTube and Reddit were especially helpful. I discovered that the problem was that the condensate drain was clogged and water had backed up into the inducer assembly. The water prevented the pressure switches from detecting that the inducer was running and this prevented the furnace from starting. When I disconnected the condensate hose *2 quarts* of water drained out of the inducer assembly! This water was supposed to drain into a small pump unit on the floor that sends collected water to the sump. Over the years mold and algae had clogged the condensate trap and caused the backup. I disconnected all the hoses and removed the trap. I blew out the trap (making a mess) and confirmed that water would easily flow through it. I put it all back together and the furnace is working fine. The sad lesson here is that you can’t always rely on supposed experts. The good news is that the Internet can be your friend. Even more details: The original symptom was that the furnace would start up, the inducer motor would run for about 20 seconds and then it would shut off. This cycle would repeat every few minutes. Every few hours the furnace completed the startup cycle and then I’d get heat. Then it would stop heating for hours, and the indoor temperature would drop to the low 60s. What I learned from YouTube is that there are multiple stages for furnace startup. The inducer motor spins a cage that sucks in fresh air for combustion, and then pushes the hot gases through the heat exchanger and out the flue. Each stage in the startup has safety checks. The furnace will not ignite if the pressure sensors don’t detect that the inducer motor is working properly. Water is a byproduct of the combustion. It starts as a vapor but then condenses in the flue pipe and drains back to the inducer assembly, where it’s supposed to run through a hose to a pump that sends it over to my basement sump. The furnace is 14 years old. Apparently that’s long enough for mold and algae to clog the condensate trap and cause water to back up into the inducer. The 2 qts of water blocked the pressure sensor switches and so the furnace wouldn’t light. Final thoughts: For over 14 years I've had great experiences with A.J. Perri. They replaced my home’s original furnace and Air Conditioner units. They moved our outside A/C unit to the side of our house so we could have more quiet in the backyard. I had them come for periodic heating and A/C maintenance checkups. My impression is that they might cost a bit more, but they were reliable. I'm saddened that I need to post such a negative review."

FAQs for water or fuel tank remove projects in Highland Park, NJ

There are several reasons why you might need to remove an oil tank. In some areas, local regulations require tanks to be removed after a certain period. Leaking tanks can pose hazards to drinking water and the environment. Plus, many municipalities won't allow property sales until an inspection confirms the oil tank is safe.

One option for disposing of an oil tank is to have your removal pro take it to a dismantling yard or salvage yard for recycling. If a salvage yard isn’t an option, you can contact a local landfill or a local oil tank removal service for help finding a proper disposal location for your tank. Typically, you’ll need to show there’s no sludge or residue in the tank.

A leaking oil tank reveals itself through increased energy bills and a noticeable oily sheen on water surfaces, which signals a malfunction. You may also experience strong oil odors and observe stained grass and deteriorating vegetation near your property. These clear warning signs demand immediate professional evaluation to protect the environment and secure your property’s safety.

Yes, states mandate soil testing during oil tank removal to detect hazardous pollutants that harm the environment. This testing confirms that no soil contamination exists. Certified specialists collect soil samples to meet regulatory requirements and ensure property safety. Conducting these tests protects water quality and the structure’s integrity while immediately triggering any necessary remediation measures.
