"Updated to four stars: After submitting this review originally, Sean called me and took full responsibility for the situation. They committed to improve the experience for other customers and gave me an appropriate discount for my time and inconvenience. I am grateful they are responsive and took this seriously. Thank you for your respect, Dr. Energy Saver! Previous review: two stars. Unfortunately, this has been a very difficult experience for me to address standing water & drainage in my crawl space. I agreed to work with Dr. Energy Saver back in October, hoping to have the work done before the rains started. However, the work was just completed on December 31. The communication of the team was absolutely horrible - with each of the team members understanding that my project was at different points. I was told it was done multiple times - with the piping above-ground, and an alarm that was supposed to be installed still in the box. Brandon and his team finally got it figured out and did a great job communicating, but there was still confusion between the manager, Sean, and the office staff, who even threatened via phone to put a lean on my home, even though I had been calling and emailing them. Grateful to Brandon for his work, and his respectfully addressing my concerns. However, the rest of the team really needs to fix their communication and customer service. "

"We had a really great experience with HomeRX for our crawl space insulation project. From the first visit, Aaron was easy to talk to, very knowledgeable, and took the time to explain everything clearly without making it feel overwhelming or salesy. The whole process - paperwork, scheduling, and communication - was smooth and straightforward. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, responsive, and professional. You can tell they have their process dialed in, which made the decision to move forward feel easy. Definitely recommend HomeRX if you want a team that’s organized, communicative, and easy to work with."

"I do not recommend ABLE Heating and Cooling. I have a zoned HVAC system in my home. I called ABLE in June because I was not getting any heating or cooling in my downstairs zone. We set up an appointment for an ABLE tech to come out to my house and look into my problem and do an over all HVAC system check. The tech found that a valve in my zoning system had failed and needed to be repaired/replaced. He also found that my air conditioning unit needed to be replaced. We setup an appointment for a team to come out and repair my zoning valve and install the new A/C unit. ABLE even gave me a discount because I was having both items taken care of at the same time. The team came out and installed and tested the new A/C unit but didn’t spend much time on the zoning valve. Nor did they test it. After they left, I checked and I was still not getting any hot or cold air downstairs. So, I called ABLE to get the problem fixed. We set a date, but the day of the appointment ABLE called and said that the installation manager who was supposed to do my repair had to cover for someone who had called in sick. This left me wondering why the sick guy’s jobs were more important than mine. It became clear to me that fixing my problem was not a priority for ABLE. I cancelled my service request and requested a refund of the funds I had already paid ABLE for the zoning problem they never fixed."

"Truly excellent. Installation of Lennox AC unit. And humidifier. We joined their service club for twice annual maintenance visit. They are very with it. They know your system when you call, and as a service member, you get quick response service. They confirm appointments by text, text you when they are coming and about to arrive. And you cab track the driver. Always knowledgeable service pros when on site with clear explanations of what happened. Pricing seems very good too. I wish all vendors were like this. 5 stars for sure."

"We replaced our old furnace with a new high efficiency furnace. Shawn came out and helped us figure what to get and gave us 4 options and estimates for each. We chose the third estimate. We set up the appointment, and set the date. Two men came to our home and did the job of removing our old furnace and AC and installing our new ones. It took 2 1/2 days to do the job and it turned out wonderful. The men were great to work with and did a terrific job. They were very polite and fun and answered all our questions. We have used Blairco for about 30+ years, and they come twice every year and do maintenance on our furnace and AC."

"Had Affordable Home Remodeling replace several old aluminum windows around our house with modern storm windows. Very knowledgable, and compared to other bids, the price was reasonable. A big plus is they help you with your Oregon energy rebates. Job itself took an extra day due to one supply issues, but not a big deal."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Portland, OR

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
