"They gave me great service and good equipment. Their prices were quiet reasonable. I did have one little problem: That whenever I need to change the electrostatic air cleaning filter, I have to sort of muscle the front door into place in order to do it, but I'm going to have them fix this for me. I would still use them again."

"I had a great experience with Infrared diagnostics and its lead Flemming Lund.  I would recommend them to anyone considering a comprehensive energy audit. <br /> Setting up the review was easy, and Flemming and his assistant arrived on time.  The review took 2-3 hours and Flemming worked methodically through the whole house taking infrared pictures of the walls in each room and highlighting areas lacking insulation.  He also performed the same analysis using a door blower that was able to highlight where the worst drafts were.  In the basement, he reviewed the water heater and identified improvements required to the venting.  They also reviewed the attic and found fan vents that required replacement.  It was a very comprehensive review.  Within 24 hours Flemming emailed a complete report with images of every room (infrared and normal to assist in locating the gaps) and a prioritized set of recommendations for improving energy efficiency. <br /> At $550 it is certainly an investment to have this analysis done, and to get the most out of the review, I would advise being present and discussing findings with Flemming along the way - he is very good (and patient) at teaching you about different issues he identifies and approaches to fixing them.  We have had a lot of issues heating our house, and so found the review incredibly helpful.  If you are considering getting this done, I would highly recommend Infrared diagnostics. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"I was very lucky to hire Tom to inspect the house I was interested in. We had to get the house inspected very promptly and, fortunately, Tom had an opening for us within 48 hours, on a Saturday afternoon. We found Tom very knowledgeable (you can't beat 40 years of experience in this business!) He treated the house as if he was the buyer, so he made sure to address every potential issue. Tom also gave us great recommendations on how to make the house more energy efficient. He was very professional and pleasant to talk to. The inspection report arrived within 24 hours. Highly recommend!"

"Adam Morrison came to our home to give us an energy assessment at our request. He was very personable and professional. He shared a lot of information, walked me through the various links on the Mass Save site and helped us change over our electric supplier. He also tested our furnace and water heater for efficiency, changed our shower head and our faucet aerators. On top of all that, he gave us 2 advanced power strips and installed a new thermostat. He also sent the necessary information to the office to help line us up for the next step of acquiring energy saving appliances, furnace, water heater etc. We found Adam to be a pleasure to deal with. He saved us a lot of precious time and money because of his expertise. I would absolutely use his services again and highly recommend him!"

"Terry arrived earlier than he stated and had most of the outside inspected when we arrived. He was very through, answered all our questions and provided a very detailed report. This report will not only help us in negotiations with the seller but as a reference for items we need to keep an eye on in the future. He also went above and beyond explaining how things worked and if we should DYI or hire pros. I highly recommend his services. One pitfall though, I now want a thermal imagery unit of my own!!"

"James just needed my electric bill to put together a solar quote. I ended up getting enough solar panels to cover all my electric needs. My solar payment is so much less than my average electric bill. Going solar is saving me so much money. James took care of the whole process and made sure my solar panels were installed in a timely manner."

"21 April 2023 Re: MacFarlane Energy Boiler and Burner System Install. My present oil heating system was 30 years old and was ready to retire. I set up a meeting with the MacFarlane Energy sales rep. Cam Lucci. Cam explained the different heating systems available, the cost factors and what the new installation would involved. He answered all my questions and after an assessment of all this information I accepted the terms of the contract. I then contacted Ken Deranian and we set up a date for the install. The whole process was very easy and concise. Brandon Lamberson, the installation technician arrive on the assigned date and time. He explained to me how and what he was going to do during the installation process. There was a team of individuals involved in this installation. A team removed the old boiler and delivered the new boiler. Another person delivered parts needed for the install Another technician, George Berry arrived the next day and assisted Brandon during the install of the boiler. In total it took two full days to accomplish the install with very little inconvenience to using hot water and any needed home heating. Brandon did a tremendous installation of the new Bederus boiler and Riello burner. All new copper tubing, multiple valves, 4 circulators, pipes with multiple tees and 45 degree angle connections. Numerous electrical connections to all the various components and the calibration of various mechanical and electrical settings. George Berry, a technician, assisted Brandon in producing a show piece of plumbing installation. The symmetry of all the pipes installed, whether vertically, horizontally or diagonally were all in perfect alignment to each other. Electrical connections all done to code. I couldn’t be happier with MacFarlane Energy and the team’s effort, and workmanship during all the phases of this installation. A job well done! Dan Harrington Walpole, MA"

"I needed a doorbell in a home that never had one. Philips Electric was one of the 2-3 companies that got back to me to set up an appointment. In two weeks they were here and in two hours my NEST doorbell was installed and working great. They were clean and professional."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Boston, MA

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
