"I needed stucco repair work on an old chimney (and other spots). Grady was meticulous and thoughtful on what approaches and materials would work. Throughout the project they allocated sufficient time for each treatment to cure and inspected the work before proceeding to the next step. Grady started the project with no money down and only required ongoing payments for materials until the project was well underway. The final payment was due only after they did a final inspection. Total project cost was also below other bids."

"Glass Doctor was recommended by our remodel contractor.  They came and did on site measurements. The rep recommended a door and allowed us to specify the height we wanted.  Door took about three weeks to come in.  They installed it and did a very professional job.
The office staff, particularly Amber, communicate very well. They are always available to answer questions.
The quality of the product and the installation is outstanding. We couldn't have asked for nicer.  It wasn't the cheapest way to go.  But we opted for spending the money as it was a remodel of the bathroom and we wanted it to be top quality.  They may have more budget priced options, we just liked what they recommended.
We would certainly use them again.

"

The glass in our aluminum framed sliding glass doors had become cloudy with moisture and mildew between the panes of glass.  I got one estimate to replace the entire sliding door units for approx. $1,500 each (or a total of $4.500).  Ouch!  Granted, you can purchase these units for $300-500 each from a home improvement center and install them yourself, but that was not an option for us.

So, I called Binswanger.  It was great!  They came out, measured and gave us a price of $1400 to replace 5 panels (they had replaced 1 of the panels several years ago, hence we only needed 5).  We felt the price was good.   The installed returned on the scheduled day, removed the old glass, installed the new, cleaned up and took away the old glass in a matter of just a few hours.  The job was done professionally; you would never know that it wasn't the original glass.

We're very pleased with the overall job and would never hesitate to call them again for any repair or replacement job.  They know their stuff!

"Made an appt. with Castle Rep, James, for 17 windows and vinyl siding. He spent 1 hour talking about how great his company and windows are before finally getting down to the issue. We were told that CASTLE makes and services their own window, with all the best technology and technicians available. The price per window for energy efficient came out to over $1,200 per double-hung window! And since they make their own products, we could not find a way to compare quality and price with other manufacturers. But his per-window price exceeds the average price of $500-700 by A LOT! When we balked, he made a call to his "manager" to see if we qualified for a "special promotional" discount. If we were to commit right there on the spot, we would get an additional 10% off! Still way to high. We said we would think about it (he got sad and snippy), and that we wanted to hear about the vinyl siding quote before we made any decisions. He told us he could not give us a siding quote until his company did an "eagle view" measurement, which would require another appointment! We had no intention of sitting through ANOTHER high-pressure appointment. High pressure, long-drawn out presentation and he would not leave us with anything in writing! No brochures, prices, nothing! He refused to put anything in writing and we could not have a break down of labor and costs. I even asked him if I could have a copyhh of the window warranty and he said "only if you purchase right now." And they did not come prepared with references or previous job locations! When we further researched the company, we found they did make very excellent products, but the #1 complaint was by far that they did not honor their lifetime warranty and that customer service was horrible. In the end, we chose not to do business.."

FAQs for stained or specialty glass service projects in Richmond, VA

To clean stained glass, dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with warm distilled water and gently wipe the surface. Skip ammonia or vinegar cleaners—they can pit the glass and weaken solder. Work in small sections, supporting the panel if it’s loose. Once dry, gently buff the piece with a microfiber towel. This gentle approach preserves colors vividly and keeps joints intact.

Give your stained glass a quick once-over each year to catch cracks, chips, fading colors, or loose hardware before they snowball into costly repairs. A professional inspection every five years is also a good idea; specialists can spot hidden structural problems and reinforce joints that you might miss. This routine keeps the panel secure, vibrant, and less expensive to maintain in the long run.

1800s or early 1900s—especially those associated with renowned studios—can fetch thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, due to their artistry and rarity. Newer reproductions rarely carry the same market value, but they still add character and color to your home. Appraisers or specialized dealers can give you a precise estimate before you decide on repairs or insurance.

Repair timelines depend on size, design complexity, and the technique required. Minor crack fills or paint touch-ups can be completed in a few hours, while full restorations—where every pane and component is disassembled—may take several weeks to complete. Craftspeople work slowly and methodically to protect fragile glass, ensuring the finished piece looks and functions as intended for decades to come.
