"As part of an overall process to improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint, we had Sustainergy perform an energy audit on our home. All went better than expected, until the inspection uncovered a significant mold problem in our attic. This was independently verified by a trusted home inspector. After obtaining several quotes for remediation and for air-sealing/insulation, we selected Sustainergy to do both. Their price was in line with other quotes, and I already had an appreciation for their work. The schedule was complicated by additional HVAC work being done at the time, part of which was in the same attic. Sustainergy arrived each day as planned and worked very nicely to dovetail with the other work. Remediation was careful and thorough, air-sealing was good, and final insulation was amazingly fast and buried all HVAC ducts as requested. An attic isn't something I would normally describe as "beautiful", but in this case that is exactly how I felt about the end product. Throughout the process, the entire crew were courteous and professional. Flequer and Lindsey answered numerous questions and went out of their way to ensure we were all on the same page and that our needs were being met. In fact, I can honestly say I have never worked with a contractor as responsive and customer-focused as Sustainergy, special credit to Flequer. That kind of customer support is rare and something I truly value. If I had a further need, I would definitely contact Sustainergy again."

"The Arlinghaus Air Service Specialist - Kyle Houlehan promptly called before arrival, and arrived in the window he informed. He was courteous, professional and kept me informed on the work. During the routine tuneup, he uncovered several issues which needed parts to be replaced. He informed his office, worked with local Tran office and went to Cincinnati to source the needed parts. I appreciate getting this part replaced, and the unit certified in good condition. As a customer who has used Arlinghaus for more than 5 years, Kyle clearly demonstrated customer satisfaction. I am well satisfied by his work. Thanks S. Thomas"

"They do a good job with a professional approach.  They have a good engineering staff.  We had our furnace put in about 3 years ago, its a hydro and we get the heat out of the ground, they had a good engineering aspect for it.  They even had a well digger.  Whenever they send a technician out, he is very knowledgable.  They fixed a problem on the whole house generator that another company had put in.  They come out in the spring and fall.  I recommend them to others.  We have several rental properties and our own home that they work with.  We have used them for 3 or 4 years."

"The inspection went well, and the report was thorough. It was about a month ago and there have been no surprises since. The only thing that could have made the report better would be including the specifications on what would make something pass. For example, rather than saying the outlet was "too close" to the shower, including the minimum distance required. But overall the inspection went well and he did a great job of ensuring my home was good to buy. <br />"

"I have used Nelson for a number of years. 4 years ago they put in a new geothermal system and standby generator at my home. They have serviced both bi-annually since then. The generator failed to operate recently, and the service received was alarming. The technician diagnosed for almost 3 hours and eventually determined that a $700 part/repair was needed and not covered under warranty. The unit would not transfer the home back to utility power. When asked if we could simply bypass the generator to run on utility power while we waited on the part, the answer was no. After 3 days without power I called another Generac supplier locally. After coming out same day to look at the generator one simple switch was pulled to restore power to the home. Further, the $700 repair part that Nelson stated was broken was actually fine. The switch that needed replaced was recalled by Generac a couple years back. Nelson never performed the warranty campaign replacement during the numerous service calls. It was also apparent that the valves had not been timed, and two major bolt were missing from the initial install on the manifold. No firmware updates had been made during those maintenance visits either causing several faults on the unit. In short, Nelson is a good HVAC company. I would never contact them for any electrical or generator based services and unfortunately after this experience I will not be using for any services."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Burlington, KY

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
