"Initial Call: Within 24 hours of contacting Retrofoam of Southwest Michigan, LLC; we received a call to schedule an appointment immediately. Bob Hafler came out on a Saturday; discussed insulation options & provided a quote. He offered his Cell # for direct communication; maintained close contact and scheduled 4 days ahead of an established appointment to work with our project needs. Day of Appointment: Technician (Dan) called when they left the shop to provide the arrival time and a 2nd time to explain that a flat tire on I-94 would delay original appt time. The crew (Dan & Shane) were professional, considerate, competent, hard-working and friendly. They explained exactly what to expect with the installation as well as cautions for airing out the fumes. They cleaned up affected work areas thoroughly of residue (including our driveway) before they left. The total time was 4 ½ hours. Although I provided a down payment in advance to authorize the work; the check was not cashed until several days after the job was complete. I feel that this shows a measure of integrity. [Initially called 4 companies to arrange quotes; this was the only company who bothered to respond and came all the way from Hamilton, MI]"

"The purpose of our job was to hopefully eliminate the recurrence of ice dams, which have now caused two water leaks into the house in 17 years, as well as destroyed gutters. As a bonus, we hope to save on our heating and cooling costs, and improve the feel of the house.
The quotes were a bit confusing to me due to my lack of understanding of proper terminology. I actually misunderstood that after a revision to our initial quote that both quotes were required to complete the total job. So the total job cost a bit more than I first expected. However, I think their prices are reasonable based on online research of the insulating methods here at Angie's List and through broader searches. They were very nice about correcting my misunderstanding, and we are pleased with the total job so far.
Two young men did the work in one day. They arrived a little earlier than the appointed start time, which was great -- it was a very long day of work for them. Because of the different types of foam used, two different trailer rigs were required. They started with the injection foam in the parts of the roof that are not human accessible, left to swap trailer rigs, and returned to do the cellulose and spray foam.
These men were very professional, considerate of our (aging and far from pristine) home with protective equipment, and did a thorough job cleaning up the house when done. Hoses for foam rigs had to come through windows. The work is hard, in cramped spaces, and requires them to wear personal protective equipment that is hot and sweaty -- even in early November. They laid out the old disintegrating fiberglass insulation that was in the crawl spaces where the roof meets the outer walls to be an extra bit of insulation in there as well. I like this better than having it removed for disposal. These guys worked hard, and deserve a great deal of respect for getting the job done, and done well.
Things to be aware of if you are doing foam insulation:
* It smells for weeks afterward as the foam out-gasses. It didn't bother us too much, and we were fortunate to have a few warm days where we could open windows. We may have had a bit more smell than others might because we have not yet closed up the wall where we had to cut an opening.
* Despite my best efforts to vacuum above the sills over the basement foundation, the spray foam still blew out a bunch of dust and debris into the basement. This was the one place they were not able to clean up well, but that's our fault for having a very full and messy basement. They did the best anyone could possibly have done down there!
End results:
* The house was immediately quieter! Not that we had a noise problem before, but the upstairs and basement areas just feel a bit quieter.
* Both the basement and the upstairs feel warmer. Prior to this insulation work, both spaces would be significantly and very noticeably colder than the rest of the house, even by mid-November. We have noticed much more even temperature throughout the entire house.
* We program our thermostat to be at 65F for getting up in the morning, the evenings, and on weekends. Nights and work days it is set to 58F. I thought the furnace would run less and the house would maintain temperature better -- but at this point, I don't think it is. It is an old house, and there are plenty of other places we are losing heat, so perhaps with more work on the other problems we can truly improve that.
* It's hard to compare the same month from one year to the next on energy use with the large variations we have in weather, but our gas usage for Nov - Dec billing cycle is nearly the same as last year. We have a gas range, clothes dryer and water heater, so there are other factors. Too soon to really know the impact on energy bills.
* We have already had one significant snow. I could see one spot maybe a foot square where there is heat loss through an injection foam area compared to surrounding areas. I don't know what might have prevented getting that area well, but I doubt there is anything that could be done at this point.
* After the damage we had from last year's heavy snows, I am not taking any chances and will continue to pull snow down with a roof rake. Things melted pretty fast after that snow, and we did get a few small icicles in the places we've had large ice dams in the past. Still, itt feels like an improvement, and as we get into the sustained colder weather we will know for sure, but I am optimistic that we won't have a recurrence of water damage from ice dams.
Based on our overall experience, we are confident in recommending Eco Foam for residential insulation work.
"

"The guys were great. Came on time, worked hard all day. Lloyd, the head of the team, explains everything really clearly. He's a good communicator and knows a lot about insulation.
Lloyd submitted our paperwork to Consumer's Energy at the end of the day. He did it electronically right at our house so we could see the submission. The rebate check is already in the bank. Also we had a question about a couple vents after the work was done. I sent an email, and in just a few hours, Lloyd was there and helped us out cheerfully, even though it turned out that I was just incompetent at opening the vent. These guys were just a pleasure to work with. I felt very confident with the work.
With the blower door measurements before and after, you can see the improvement. Between the rebate and the lower energy costs, I will break even on my investment by the end of winter 2013-14. Every winter after that, I will be saving money on heating.
I do recommend that folks sign up for an energy audit (if available) from Consumer's beforehand. I did it afterwards so couldn't use some additional coupon.

"

"Matt came out and did the work in a timely manner just when we needed him to be there. He did a great job sealing the walls and the rim joists and we were amazed at how much warmer the room was almost immediately. There was a slight miscommunication when the work was done and Matt cheerfully came back to correct the problem. He went over and above to make it right and to make sure that we were satisfied. We are REALTORS in Kalamazoo and we will definitely recommend that others use Great Lakes Insulation to increase the energy efficiency of their homes. Though their prices are very competitive and cheaper than some, they may not be the cheapest option. We believe they are worth the cost. We look forward to being much warmer next winter! They certainly provided exceptional customer service and completed the job with professionalism. We are very satisfied!

"

"Retrofoam removed the fiberglass and blown-in insulation from our attic. They then sprayed their open cell foam on the underside of our roof. Both work crews were very professional and conscientious of the areas where they worked in our house. They did a great job with the coverage areas of the foam. The temperature difference in our attic now is amazing compared to before. It is comfortable to be in the attic now. We use it for storage so we are up there often."

"Eric (owner) and Russ were great! Eric gave me a quote and generally seemed interested in the job and me as well. I received quotes from other companies, and they treated me like a number and did not seem interested in even doing the work. Ultimately, Eric and Russ were able to complete the work on time and it looked great. The pricing was within reason based on what was completed and the quality of work.
I would recommend to anybody looking to finish their basement or remodel home!
I feel bad for the delay in this review, as I stopped my Angie's List subscription and forgot to leave a positive review.

"
