"Thank you James Im, Antonio and crew for an amazing experience and a job well done! It is rare these days to find a home improvement company that you can trust from beginning to end. AHC staff and representatives ensured that every detail from estimates, to coordinating delivery of materials and quality control of installation was performed to the highest standards and exactly on time. James and Antonio/crew were attentive to our every question and concern, and in the end made the experience with AHC a memorable one worthy of the highest level recommendation. Bottom line: If you choose any other roof replacement contractor - you will be making a mistake!"

"Debbie, the AC&R salesperson, was very knowledgeable and confident. They were the 2nd quote I got for work and came in even lower than I expected (which gave me pause as a low bid is a red flag). But true to her word, they did the work professionally (mostly...see below) and promptly. While I had another company do the energy audit for the Pepco rebate, AC&R took over the work, did the blown fiberglass one day and the spray foam the next.

For the blown fiberglass in the attics above our additions, they added spray foam (from a can) around any gaps per the contract and foam board baffles at the soffits. The installer noted that all our soffits were blocked and the batting insulation was too wide for the rafter channels, so he leveled it out as best he could to ensure an even coating of blown insulation. At the end, he sealed up the gaps between the attic and our to-be-finished upstairs (cape cod style, so all one room).

For the spray foam insulation, the team came in the next day, and I had to be out of the house due to fumes. I did come back around noon as they expected to be done well before then. They didn't know I came in and I went to the back of the house to watch TV on my work break. The one annoyance was during their cleanup, one of the installers came down into our kitchen and then saw me. He said he was looking for a vacuum cleaner to clean the stairs. I told him don't worry about the carpet as it was getting pulled up, but this was the one piece of unprofessionalism I noted above. Contractors should NEVER use the homeowner's property; they should bring their own tools, including vacuums!

While the spray foam can get very messy, they kept the splatter mostly contained to inside the crawlspace, not the finished flooring. However, I was surprised that they didn't tape off the outlet covers or light switched. since the particles are so small, we're going to have to replace the switches/receptacles at our cost. Also, there was a storm door screen that wasn't covered and now needs cleaned. Basically, I think they should have taken more care in covering the very few items we left upstairs and the outlets/switches.

They didn't spray around the window frames (large gaps where window weights used to be) because the open cell foam would expand too much. If I wasn't there, I think they would have just left, but it was clear in our contract discussions they needed to insulate those spaces too. They used a few cans of "Good Stuff" equivalent, but didn't fill in the gaps entirely. It did the job well enough, but it's a ding against them as I expected more preparation.

Lastly, I thought that AC&R would walk me through all the scheduling and final "test out" (for the Pepco rebate), but I had to contact them and schedule with someone different each time. They were always prompt, but I expect the experts to know to do this for/with me rather than expect me to know the process. I go through it once in a lifetime while they do it weekly.

While the end of the review sounds more negative than positive, I would definitely recommend AC&R out to others as they're priced right, they have been in business for over a century, and like any contractor, you just need to follow up to be sure everything is done to your satisfaction.

"They pointed out areas of air loss that needed to be covered or blocked and advised  more attic insulation which service they will provide. Their price offer seems reasonable.  I'm still crunching numbers.

His crew was also polite and hard working, they got the job done when they said they would and I’m so pleased with the results ! My home is the same temperature on every level and my energy bill is lower then it’s ever been. Thank you Bob and your team I will definitely be referring you to my friends and family."

"I called them out based on positive reviews to get an estimate for what I knew would be a fairly extensive repair surrounding a cricket on my roof behind my chimney that wasn't doing its job.  I hadn't been on the roof personally in 2 years at that point except to finally pinpoint the remaining problem (as I'd already redone the crown and flashed the chimney with an elastomeric material).
Unfortunately, the contractor found that there was evidence of rot on other parts of the roof.  I'm no fainting violet, so I was up on the roof with him to show him what I already knew to be a problem, and I immediately saw that he was right--not only were the shingles curling, but the decking under them was spongy underfoot!
I accepted their estimate, and the work was scheduled for nearly a month out because the contractor wanted to be personally available in the date because of the complexity of the job (and had an upcoming vacation).  The problem, though serious over time, wasn't pressing, so that was totally fine.  I lost my phone briefly shortly before the window of dates (I work from home, so I was fine with a window and told them so up front), but I was later able to determine that they gave me a specific date and time right before the window and again let me know they were coming the morning of.  They showed up early, the crew confirmed the location of the work, and they set to work.
I like to track work as it's happening so that there are no ugly surprises on either end.  So I was back on the roof to see the condition before the damaged decking was removed--and the damaged pieces were very bad!  There was NO QUESTION that it would have been wrong to install another layer of roofing over such damage.
When they removed the decking, I freaked out because I discovered that our cathedral ceiling had only R-11 insulation!  The crew was VERY nice and let me dash to Lowe's to get R-30 batting to replace the R-11 wherever we could reach.  (There's no attic with cathedral ceilings, so this was my only shot to address it.)  I worked with them on this because I knew I was delaying the work while they installed it (though they worked on other things while I was gone) for something that wasn't in the estimate, but they didn't begrudge me the extra 15 min or so for the guys who jumped in on that.
I left them to their work until a couple of hours later, when they'd built the new cricket.  Everything looked great.  The flashing was installed correctly.  But the counterflashing wasn't being installed the best when I checked on that.  The best way to do it is to cut 1" into the mortar and then insert a section of counterflashing shaped like an L into the groove and then use sealant on that edge.  This directs water in a permanent way away from under the shingles.  They were planning on nailing it flush and caulking it.  Now, a LOT of roofers do it like that.  It isn't outrageously wrong, either. But it's a way that is strongly discouraged if there's any other option because caulk always cracks and requires REGULAR maintenance (2-5 years after the initial installation, usually, with reoccurring maintenance just as often) whereas inset counter-flashing can last for decades without repair.  When I said I'd like it the other way--set into the mortar--the roofing crew immediately agreed to do it that way.  That extended the job by at least 20 minutes, close to 30, as the rest of the crew waited on the two guys doing that work to finish up.  To their credit, they didn't tell me that attaching flat was "just fine" or would work "just as well" or that they'd done "a thousand houses that way and never had a problem."  They just said, "Okay," and did it the way I asked.  :)  It would have been better if they did the superior counter-flashing method without asking, but since they were happy to do it the best way when I asked with zero argument, I still definitely call that an A for quality!
They cleaned up very well when they left.  In fact, they swept my entire roof, not just the new section or the section below the new section.  They went around with a rake-like tool to get any stray bits and pieces and dealt with several very small things not on the bid.  Overall, a really great job!
