"I am very impressed and extremely satisfied with the professionalism, expertise, competence, and customer orientation the whole Perma-Seal team displayed during recent work completed on sidewalk leveling and basement sealing projects on my home. Work scope, costs, and timing were explained patiently and in detail by George Heller up front. The sidewalk leveling work from Doro went routinely, everything on time with excellent results. The basement sealing work was a bit trickier, as electrical wires and a pipe bundle all bunched together around the main sewer line provided multiple leak paths and required a second attempt to completely resolve. Doro, Ramon, and Waldo went beyond the originally contracted scope to ensure all potential leak paths were sealed off. They didn?t care what the contract said, their focus was on my complete satisfaction, no excuses, no shortcuts. Perma-Seal stands behind their commitments and I would not hesitate to call on them again."

"I've used Domicile Consulting for several homes, after initially finding the company on Angie's List. Dan Cullen is exceptionally knowledgeable, objective and insightful. Prices are reasonable and well worth the investment. Dan takes copious pictures and compiles them in a handy report with recommendations. Highly recommended."

"Very responsive, appointment easy to schedule. Our problem was a chronic (16 months) egg/sulfur smell in our hot water (also in our cold water but NOTHING compared to the hot water). The house has been in the family since 1973 and there has never been any well water issues - always great testing water with no smell at all. We came home from vacation back in September 2017 and immediately noticed the smell. We dealt with it for 16 months trying different things such as changing the anode rod in the water heater (smell returned within 1 week), later replaced the water heater, that didn't help at all, when we finally realized we couldn’t use our whole house humidifier because it was blowing the sulfur smell around we finally decided to call a professional. Brett tested the water, thankfully no concerns (other than hardness). He thought perhaps a particular bacteria was in our well causing the sudden onset of smelly water. Brett sanitized the well and suggested we do that yearly, drained and sanitized the water heater, replaced our old water softener, flushed the lines and everything is running great. It's been 1 week and there is no sulfur smell, water softener running correctly and water tests amazing. I love the new water softener, it has a countdown meter letting me know when the next recharge will occur. Very happy with the job. I will definitely use again and also recommend Hobson’s Plumbing to others."

"The plumbers this company sent to my house did not put the washing machine drain hose back in the drain. We did laundry and flooded the kitchen and damaged some wood flooring. Contacted this company and they said it's on the plumber to fix it. I don't have plumber contacts. They said they would help me get it fixed and did ok at first. It's been over 6 weeks later and no one has done anything. Nothing has been fixed. Everyone has said, including the plumber, this was not our fault, yet no one will fix it! I've asked even for a refund so I can get the floors fixed and again, nothing. This is the company we hired and they just pass the buck. They are not helpful but nice so try to give you hope things will be ok. It's a joke, poor customer care and I will NEVER use them again and wish I could have called around instead of using Home Depots suggestions. "

"Jeffrey arrived on time and was responsive. However, Jeff missed a VERY crucial, important and now COSTLY expense for my husband and I to NOW repair. Jeff missed many concerns with our front door. It has major gaps, wood rot and the door also hits the front step as you open the door. A few weeks after moving in we noticed our house was FREEZING and it was all due to the front door. The ENTIRE door needs to be replaced and I am so angry he did NOT catch this. This is costing us thousands of dollars to replace. Would NOT recommend Jeff to anyone. On our report under major concerns: he put none. Items reaching the end of their life or need replacement in the next 5 years : he put none. Items to monitor: he put none. Do not hire Jeff. Now thousands of dollars in the hole."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Chicago, IL

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
