"My home had a 16 year old furnace and air conditioner which both were not working probably and my electric bill was sky high trying to cool the upstairs of my home. I had Climatemakers come and check out my unit as well as give me a price on a new system and installation. The price of a new 16 seer was the best out of the hundreds of HVAC companies in the Hampton roads area and I couldn’t be happier with the installation crew they were very Quiet and respectful do to the wife working from home. They even matched the thermostat backing with the wall color. The wife was Very happy with that, I was very happy with my electric bill dropping over half of what I was paying the summer before. ps. Thanks for the prompt service during the Covid outbreak."

"Evan showed up early to our home inspection! He was very knowledgeable and was able to do the home inspection quickly, professionally, and respectfully! He made us feel comfortable with what he found and was able to explain everything that he found. He also walked us through how some of the things in the house worked. It was an awesome experience!"

"Responding to a radio ad for a "Heat Pump Check-Up" for $1, I called and scheduled such.  The technician was punctual, professional and thorough.  Unfortunately, the compressor was dead and the heat pump needed to be replaced.  I was not charged the reimbursable fee for the Check-Up, and we scheduled an estimator to come and review my HVAC. <br /> The estimator was punctual and seemingly professional.  He reviewed the heat pump and the furnace in the attic and pointed out some things we were unaware of (never having gone into the attic.)  Other estimators disagreed with some of his findings.  More importantly, he did not address the mismatching of the heat pump and air handler capacity.  The mismatch was causing the heat pump to expire in 8 - 10 years.  He also made a big deal about the circuit breaker was oversized.  Specifically, he said it was a fire hazard and immoral to leave it as is.  His proposal left it as is. <br /> In the process of replacing my HVAC, I got 18 proposals from 10 vendors.  His proposal was the highest cost and 15% and 18% higher than vendor proposing the same equipment.  When I suggested he revisit his pricing, he sent an insulting and presumptive e-mail.  He also said he discussed his proposal/solution with the owner of the company and got permission to offer a "special" satisfaction deal. <br /> I am skeptical he talk with the owner.  First, his company is an accepted vendor for offering Dominion Virginia Power incentives for Heat Pump up grades.  The incentive is $200 but a qualifying heat pump was not proposed (14.5 SEER vs. 14 SEER.)  Since House Call Company (a.k.a. Thomasson Enterprises, Inc.) has to apply to become an accepted vendor, I doubt the own was eager to approve the less efficient machine.  Second, the proposed machine did not qualify for the Federal tax credit of $300. <br /> Some people at House Call Company are a pleasure to work with.  At least one other is insulting, contemptuous, presented a proposal that was unacceptable and has soured me on the company entirely. <br />"

"The company came to my house at the appointed time and spent over an hour gathering data to develop a good quote.  Did a excellent job of developing heat/cooling calculations and providing an impressive proposal.  While I chose another vendor, I am impressed enough in this company to consider them for future work."

"Brian was very professional and was able to come by very soon after I called to diagnose our system. He helped us avoid a very costly and unnecessary repair. I really appreciated his integrity and knowledge, and I will be calling Guy Smith again next time I have an HVAC problem."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Norfolk, VA

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
