"
Cliff the company owner inspected the attic and under the house. He advised me the insulation in the attic was inefficient, the old insulation needed to be removed and a radiant barrier installed, the HVAC ducts needed to needed new R8 insulation, and new R38 insulation. He also went under the house where there was no insulation. He advised we install R19 insulation and a radiant barrier which will also hold the insulation from falling down. He also advised to install a moisture barrier.

The reason we ask for the inspection, the ac was not cooling the house without running constantly. we called our home warranty

r cas needed to has not
"

"It seems like we've had off and on problems with this heater. All of a sudden it quits working. So we have to have somebody to come out and fix it. Nobody seems to be able to fix it. We felt comfortable that they weren't trying to gouge us or selling us stuff that we don't need. Basically we just paid for a service call. Just one person came out. It didn't take long, maybe less than an hour. They don't leave a mess. They're nice and neat. They got my heater running. I think their pricing is very fair."

"Hughes Construction did an AMAZING job. Out of ALL the local contractors I contacted they were the only ones who were honest, competent, courteous and followed through. They knew exactly how to fix it and now I dont have to worry about mold or water damage when the rain arrives. And when they were done, they washed all the windows too! The other contractors left me high and dry. Their prices are fair and they are trustworthy. I plan to hire them again when it's time to do the whole house remodel. Thank you Hughes Construction!"

"Chico Roofing Company completed three important jobs for me. My 20-year roof was at year 22 and needed to be replaced. I had been considering rain gutter covers for some time, and solar panels were part of my plan for the future. Chico Roofing Company was able to do all three of these tasks--new roof, rain gutter covers, and the addition of solar panels. In addition, I had some tubular skylights installed by them since they also offer that service. The delivery and clean-up of materials daily for all jobs was organized, systematic, and efficient.
I could not be more pleased. The roofing crew was professional, friendly, and punctual. They explained what they were doing. In the original bid, they included a section of dry rot repair on the small section of the roof that I had pointed out. They noticed dry rot at the base of my chimney as they were roofing, and for a reasonable additional cost, repaired that.
The solar panel array was designed for my house and thoughtfully addressed the shade trees on the property. The solar panel crew was just as focused and efficient. I am particularly pleased with the fact that if there is an issue with either the roof under the solar panels or the solar panels themselves, the same company covers it--and the company is local. And I have a warranty for both!"

"The owner of Redding Comfort and Air actually made the repair. It was
on a weekend and we were out of town. The service order had been placed
by the property management company that managed the rental and they
could only authorize a maximum of $200 for repair without further prior
permission from us. The main control board of the unit was burned out
and repairs came to approximately $400. Since we could not be reached,
the company owner made the repairs and charged only $200 rather than let
the tenants go without heat through the weekend. The heating and AC
unit has worked fine ever since then. We use this company now to do
annual service checks on all our rentals.
"

"Very quick and responsive. Mike Gamache was a real straight shooter. He was the only contractor that I talked to that I felt like I could get on the same level. Once we started mike was really helpful working with me around my work schedule and working on his days off. He was always there when I asked and he always was the guy dealing with problems I had and fixed them ASAP."

"

The first day, all the loose insulation was vacuumed out of the attic and the dusty, but otherwise pristine, batts were removed. The next day, our old, but still serviceable, HVAC system was demolished and removed piece by piece. Gulp. I sure hope these guys know what they're doing.

But Mike MacFarland's messages make a world of sense. Keep the ductwork straight, short, tight and well-insulated, and improve the air-tightness of the home by sealing the attic and vastly improving the actual performance of the insulation...and a home can be made much more comfortable with much less energy. (Corresponding work should also be done on the crawlspace, but that's still in our future). In our case, a 5 ton unit was replaced with a 1-1/2 to 2 ton heat pump with an efficient and variable speed air handler.
One of the hallmarks of this company is that it constantly collects and shares data. So, I'm confident that the results of two weeks of work are as promised. But, the crew also gets feedback that helps it craft the best practices of the future. And, armed with a mountain of data, Mike seems to be a teacher and leader in his industry. Knowing that his crew, as excellent as it is, cannot possibly fix all the millions of energy-wasting homes in CA, he's doing his level best to spread the word. With his faith in data analysis and his firm grasp of the physics involved, Mike is also one of the best scientists I've ever met.
The crew is professional in every sense of the word--knowledgeable, talented and considerate of the home's occupants.
So far, we have not had one of Redding's notorious extreme weather days to fully challenge our new system and I have yet to receive the first month's PG&E bill, but we already appreciate the steadier, quieter and cleaner ventilation of our second floor. Some major annoyances that have existed since our 20 yr old house was built are now gone--the doors no longer slam when the AC comes on, and the soffit light covers no longer rattle when the wind blows. A dark hallway corner is now illuminated with a new recessed LED light installed at the time of attic repairs. Carbon monoxide is no longer being pulled into our home from an improperly vented propane water heater (!)
The overhaul was expensive, but I think every dollar was well-spent. (Pricing was fair. And without even being asked, Mike and Brian found ways to save us money while the project was in progress). This contrasts with the thousands of dollars we wasted previously for cleaning, sealing and/or replacement of ducts, which only served to increase the airflow balance problems and noise levels in our house. We might have purchased fewer solar panels three years ago if we had connected with Energy Docs first. Because of the inertia in the industry--and, I suppose, the lack of demand for change from consumers--most new homes are still being built with oversized, leaky HVAC systems. Talk about waste!
As I was finishing up my first draft of this review, last month's PG&E bill arrived. Under less than ideal conditions (high temperatures and construction), our usage was surprisingly low-- about 45% of the previous year's and the previous month's. I can't wait until the next statement!

"
