"On Friday, May 31st, I called Surgi's to come out because of it being extremely warm inside. I had changed the batteries in the thermostat, but that didn'thelp.  They sent Wayland out on Saturday.  He said that the unit needed freon and he put in about 4 lbs of it.  He also said that I had a leak, but in order to find it, he would have to charge me an additional $135 to trace it.  I decided to wait on that because he explained that by all probability, the evaporator coils might need to be changed and that would be almost as much as replacing the air handler unit.  Since my unit is a Trane and 15 years old, I decided to wait.  When he presented me with the bill, there were additional charges for labor to put in the freon and to clean the outside only of the condensing unit which he did with a hose.  The original bill was $414.95 less 15% from a coupon on Angie's list which they honored.  So, the net was $352.71.  I gave him a check for this amount. On Monday, I reached out to the owner, Craig Johnson and explained to him that I was somewhat dismayed because Wayland had not told me about the additional charges which totaled $85.  Craig apologized for that and offered to only charge me the initial service call less 15%, but I told him that I would be more than willing to pay for the freon (4 lbs) and the service call, just not the additional fees.  So, he offered to reimburse me the difference which included another $60 for the freon because Wayland had misquoted the price.  Per Craig it was less.  Because of this company's very strong reputation and credibility in the market, I would most certainly use them again as I do understand how these types of things happen from time to time and from my view point, in no way does it have a negative reflection on this company.  I am satisfied for the manner in which they handled the situation and I will certainly give them the opportunity to bid on replacing my unit when the time comes.

"Roosevelt came out and checked my system to see why we weren't getting cold air. He found that we had too low pressure due to freon leaking. He checked the outdoor unit and evaporator coil and determined the leak was coming from the evaporator coil. He was able to get it replaced the next morning. He and his colleague were professional and quick with their work."

"All went well, and we have been pleased with the performance of the unit; however, I did want Angie's List members to know that one of the workers fell through our attic, leaving a hole and dangling, unusable light fixture in our hallway. I did not want to pay in full until the ceiling was fixed, as promised by this company. They insisted I pay and agreed I could write beneath my signature that they were to return or have another company fix the problems. They never called or returned, and my husband asked me to let it go. Ha! I never did--at least until we had it fixed!

"I called late on a Friday afternoon after my air went out. They came after hours, installed the new unit, and took the old one for evaluation & possible repair. A year later I called them back for another ac problem (different unit), and they came same day. Whereas another contractor told me to junk the unit, Greg replaced a small part & all was well. While with me the second trip, I mentioned several other small jobs, and they got right on them! The vent hood took a trip into the attic and up onto the roof, but they figured out the problem and solved it. This hood was damaged during Katrina (12 years ago) & Ive had several companies out to look/repair and nobody was able to diagnose problem. Now I have my hood back! Repaired two ceiling fans that I'd been told to junk, repaired a pendant light wired incorrectly by another contractor, and even replaced some light bulbs in my 12-foot ceiling-ed rooms! Excellent service, very fair pricing, good responsiveness, and just all-around nicefolks. I HIGHLY recommend!"

"New installation went well. I was a little upset that only 50% was covered being that the unit was 19 years old. I'm sure that parts for something that old would be hard to find. Replacement was recommended."

FAQs for swamp cooler installation and replacement projects in Reserve, LA

Swamp coolers are quite energy-efficient, using only 15% to 35% of the electricity that traditional central air conditioning units consume. This can lead to significant savings on your energy bills. However, keep in mind that swamp coolers require water to operate and may not cool your home as effectively in extremely hot or humid conditions. When considering overall efficiency, it is essential to weigh both electricity and water usage, as well as the cooling needs specific to your local climate.

Evaporative coolers only work in dry climates because they cool by moistening the air. If the air is already moist, this will have little to no cooling effect. Central AC is a better choice if you live in a humid climate, such as the Midwest, eastern, or western coastal regions.

To install a swamp cooler on a roof, a local HVAC specialist will first find and cut a spot free of wiring and obstructions. They’ll then install metal bracing, legs, brackets, the ceiling duct register, ductwork, power, and thermostat wires. Once installed, they’ll seal all openings, attach duct connections, and install a thermostat. Before leaving, they’ll run cool water piping to the unit and inspect all the connections.

The cost to repair your swamp cooler ranges from $50 to $600, depending on the issue, whether new parts are needed, and the chosen repair service. Depending on the type of pad your system uses, you will need to change out the pads every one to three years for proper operation. When budgeting for the cost to repair a window unit, expect to pay around $230.

The U.S. Department of Energy states that swamp coolers can cool a single room by five to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. However, this largely depends on the size and installation method of the evaporative cooler. You can only achieve these results in a dry climate, such as the American South, as it’s easier to cool rooms in humid environments with central air.

Swamp cooler water usage varies depending on the size of the unit. Smaller evaporative units may use one gallon per hour, while much larger units could use up to 15 gallons of water per hour. Most homeowners can expect their unit to use between seven and 10 gallons of water per hour of usage.
