The house A/C quit working Sunday afternoon in 90 degree weather.  We called Total Comfort and left a message with the company that evening after receiving a referral from our neighbors who had their A/C unit replaced by Total Comfort.  Called again the next morning, the woman who took our call was extremely nice, she said that she had our message and was about to call.  She asked if we had received a call from their technician on Sunday evening.  We stated that we had not, at which the woman was surprised and apologized.  She said she would take up that issue internally to the company but that we should have heard from the technician that same day.  None the less, she was able to schedule a service visit that same afternoon from 2:00-4:00.  The Service Technician showed up about 20 minutes earlier than expected.  He quickly diagnosed the initial problem as a bad capacitor and said that he needed to replace it so that the unit would start and he could then finish the diagnosis process. Before he started, he gave us a range of options and prices for replacing the capacitor along with the warranty info for each. Once he replaced the capacitor, he went through his diagnostic procedures.  Except for the capacitor, the unit was functioning normally.  He also checked the various air filters but we had just replaced those last month.  All told he was complete in about 45 minutes.

Kudos to all the company personnel for politeness, responsiveness, and customer service.

"Computer did the "gotta send info to Microsoft" but when tried to reboot it ran through automatic repair without success. I did all the alternative without any success. He came and picked up the hard drive on Tuesday and returned it on Saturday. Fortunately he was able to "restore" without any data loss. Very happy with outcome."

"The main sewer line was busted off right at the house.   I had called a couple of plumbers to get an estimate on the repair.  Davis was the best price and could get to it when I got back from out of town.  However, I could not get him to send me anything in writing stating what he was doing, cost, etc.  Also, my brother who does site development and plumbing for new home development wanted to talk with him just to confirm how he was going to make the repair.  My brother made several calls to him and left messages, no response.  I called Mr. Davis and spoke to him directly and asked him to return my brother's call and answer my brother's questions so we could move forward with the scheduled repair.  When I got home, Mr. Davis had not called my brother back nor sent me anything in writing.  I canceled the scheduled repair and went through the process again to find a plumber to make the repair.

"Called DM Select after an A/C repair person with another company called to postpone a second service call because he could not find freon for my unit, saying he would call when he did. DM gave me 3 time ranges to come out the next day for a free 2nd opinion diagnoses, so I saved $95 on that, although the $95 would have gone toward any work done. I was called 30 minutes before Christian's arrival. He was very knowledgeable, professional, patient and explained a variety of options. My heating and A/C units are 13 years old. He explained why this unit may not last as long as the previous unit which lasted 22 years. Newer units are made of a lighter metal but are more efficient. The freon used in my unit is being phased out by EPA, so difficult to find and can be expensive. (I had recently read something about that online). He had this freon on his truck so I didn't have to wait for him to find some and return at a later date. A clear advantage of working with a larger company. Christian gave me the pros and cons of just adding sealant for the leak (which he said appeared to be in the coils) and freon: may last 1-3 years, will depend on use, the condition of the unit and size of the leak. When the system ran out of freon the coils warmed up releasing a lot of water down through the heating unit and onto my basement floor. There was a lot of water but it dried after a couple of days after the unit was turned off. He tested the heating unit to be sure water that leaked through it did not damage that unit. Works, at least for now. Christian gave me options with pricing: adding sealant and freon was, of course, the least expensive so I went with that. The price was $50 higher than the quote given by the other contractor, but it was worth it having them come to my house the day after I called with the sealant and freon. Other options included replacing the coils (there is a waiting list for these older coils and they may not be available), replace just the A/C, or both the A/C and heating unit. I decided to wait hoping I could get another few years out of them. I appreciated DM Select's quick response. Wish I had called them the previous week as my A/C died at the beginning of a very hot few days."

"They came in to inspect our firplace and chimney the summer of 2012, and they were honest with us.  The person who came out let us know that our system was in great condition, and did not need any service. He could of easliy over sold us on unnecessary products and services. We appreciate his honesty.

FAQs for swamp cooler service or repair projects in Stevensburg, VA

A well-maintained swamp cooler can last between 10 and 15 years. Its longevity depends on usage frequency, water quality, and proper care. Regular maintenance, like winterization and protective measures, can preserve your system's efficiency and prevent premature breakdowns, ensuring reliable cooling performance over its lifespan. Hiring a professional to take care of any repairs over your swamp cooler’s lifespan will ensure it’s restored to proper functioning and can help it last longer.

You should consider replacing your swamp cooler if it shows signs of severe corrosion, inadequate maintenance, advanced age, restricted airflow, or ongoing leaks. When repair costs and performance inefficiencies make restoration impractical, replacement may be the best option. Evaluating these issues with a professional ensures you choose the most effective solution, preserving comfort and cost efficiency while avoiding further deterioration of the system.
