"It finally came time for us to replace two old wooden garage doors. First I did some research on garage doors in general. Lots of info on the Internet. Then I did extensive research on quality garage door contractors in my area. Used Yelp and other sources. Came up with a list of five quality candidates and sent details to each for bids. Eliminated 3 in relatively short order for various reasons. Came down to two candidates for the same two door options (either a Clopay or a CHI) -- Academy and another contractor. I focused on all decisioning points -- service, price, features, warranty, etc. Both were very close on price so that was not a discriminating factor. However, all the other factors came out very much in favor of Academy. Our sales contact, Dave McLaughlin was superb. Knowledgeable, responsive, helpful. The two managers at HQ -- John and Alan -- also very professional and responsive. So I did the order with Academy and selected the Clopay doors. Doors arrived in the time period they said. Scheduled the install. Jim and Coach (two HUGE guys!) showed up and did the install. They were even able to deal with the fact that my floor was off level just a shade. Made the doors fit well. Thanks guys! So far so good! Love the new doors! SO much better than the old ones in every way. Now I have to fix up my house b/c the garage doors are now the best part!"

"We are selling our home and the buyer's inspection said that our windows would not hold open. I called William Boston and he was very helpful on the phone and even though he was very busy he asked one of his workers to come out to the house to see what needed to be done. His evaluation was that when the windows were cleaned they were not replaced properly. He took each window out and realigned them so that now they work well and the windows stay in place when opened. I want to thank him for his responsiveness and his ability to do the necessary repairs.

"Hammer and Nail contacted me within 10 minutes of my submission of an online request  for information. That right off the bat impressed me as two other contractors I contacted prior to Hammer and Nail never contacted me back even after I left them voice messages. Hammer and Nails sales rep Nikos came to my home and showed and explained to me all of my product choices and then spent a significant amount of time measuring and remeasuring the monster size door to be replaced.  Prior to my door order being submitted, another Hammer and Nail employee came to re-measure and confirm the original measurements. Due to the size of the door (and double screen doors) and transom it was pretty much a custom built door and it did take about 6 weeks for the door to be delivered from the Marvin factory but I was informed by Nikos that that would be the case and I had no objections to the time frame. Once the door arrived, the construction staff quickly scheduled installation. James and his install crews showed up exactly on time. James and his crew were very courteous and took great measures to protect my floors before demolition of the existing door. The guys did an excellent job of installing the new doors and transom. James himself made sure that the screen doors latched properly and that the doors were aligned perfectly. The crew used spray float insulation instead of cramming in little pieces of fiberglass insulation. The crew did a great job caulking the walls inside and out and cleaned up after themselves before they left. I am so pleased by this experience with Hammer and Nail that I will be calling them in the near future to replace my basement door.

"We hired Sino American to deal with the aftermath of a plumbing disaster in our hundred year old row house in downtown DC – the original cast-iron pipes below our bathrooms and over our central hallway had sprung a leak and could not be repaired. The replacement of the pipes would likely require tearing out the flooring of the bathrooms, so while we were at it, it made sense to renovate them. Sino American’s was neither the lowest nor the highest bid, but we hired the company because its proprietor, Mason Callejas, was both candid and creative in suggesting ways we could improve the bathrooms in the course of renovating them, and because the reviews here and elsewhere praised his communication throughout the project. For example, he was willing to bid the job with an alternate price that would involve repairing the pipes only from below, without ripping out the bathroom floors (we ended up not going that route). He also suggested something that had not occurred to us – making an insurance claim about the leaking pipes (this ended up providing a modest payment toward the cost of the demolition to get at the pipes). And, his bid seemed to involve the smallest amount of time when we could have to be out of the house while both bathrooms would be out of order It was a good choice. We had to be out of the house for at least three weeks, so we scheduled the work for a time when we were going to be abroad. That complicated the communications, but Mason did a great job of sending photos and talking to my brother and a friend who were willing to be our standins while we were away. (and the friend is a retired contractor who was very impressed both by Mason and by the work that his staff were doing). He had good ideas for improving the bathroom flooring (thus lessening some of the problems with the house’s construction that contributed to the problems with the pipe) We ended up with two very nice bathrooms; and along the way we added new kitchen stone counters and repainting of some our other downstairs rooms. The construction took a bit longer than estimated (you have to expect the unexpected in construction jobs), but the time we could not use the bathrooms was still less than any of the other bids had suggested would be needed. The price crept up over time given the add-ons needed to address issues arising during the project), but remained lower than the highest of the bids were received. And SinoAmerican was very good at the last-minute fixes needed at the punch-list stage of the process My wife and I have hired a number of contractors for jobs big and small over the past 35 years to deal with our own home as well as an investment property in DC, and among them, Sino-American ranks with the very best.
