"Very well. Technician, John, was patient and thorough as he cleaned and took readings of the systems. He took the time to walk me through the maintenance and care that I need to take care of the Heating and water heater systems of my newly acquired condo in Fairfax County Virginia."

"<br /> <p>After speaking with the Home Energy Detective, I hired them to do an energy audit. The results were pretty surprising even for me. The old, sheet metal ductwork was really leaky, and I had already seen that it wasn't sealed at all by the original builder. There was also a lot of heat coming from the attic door (no surprise here). <br /> They presented different ideas about ways to better insulate the home and about sealing gaps. As we went through the house during the blower-door test, which blows air out of the home and allows air to enter, the auditor showed me areas with heavy airflow using a smoke pen and an infra-red camera (very cool!). So, I could see the hot spots and feel and see how much air was leaking from the walls and from the sheet metal ductwork.</p> <p>The auditor told me the details about a process called Aeroseal to seal the ducts from inside. I had already heard of this process years ago. Given the that the former owner had already installed extra insulation in the attic, I decided to have the duct sealing and cleaning done and have an attic hatch installed.<br /> The guys came and cleaned the ducts and then sealed them up. They are able to measure the airflow as the ducts are coated, and it dropped from about 28-29% to around 6-7%. <br /> As we went through that hot summer, the temperature imbalance mostly disappeared. It was really amazing, and the electric bills never got above $150, and that's considering everything is electric. Also, the indoor air quality improved dramatically since the ducts were'nt sucking stuff in from the wall cavities. Seems we have to dust with much less frequency.<br /> Before having the audit, I had thought that I might need a second system for the upstairs, but now NOT the case. I could have spent $5,000 or $6,000 on a new system when I didn't need it. The duct cleaning and sealing was about 30-40% the cost of a system, and it solved the issue.</p> Everyone involved was extremely knowledgeable, professional and on-time. The work quality was great and the crews cleaned up well. <br /> I'd highly recommend them. <br />"

"I had received quotes from several other window and door installers, including the large national brands. I actually put down payments with two different installers, but each came back saying the had underbid the job after the engineer came to measure. So we voided the contracts. I couldn't find installers on NextDoor from neighbors, and frankly, Angie's List and Thumbtack didn't have many leads for sliding glass doors installers. The job by Home Exteriors Energy Consultants Inc went very well. After the two previous voided contracts, I broadened my search for more specialists. I work in Tyson's Corner, and found a local showroom on Google Maps. So I decided to visit the storefront unannounced to see if they could help. The showroom has a sliding glass door, exactly what I needed. It's the L'egance Patio Door by Thermal Industries out of Pittsburgh. I had the opportunity to speak to the owner and he indicated they've been ordering and installing this door for many years and his crew does cut-out installations all the time. My primary concern was energy efficiency because this door would go near our dining area. He provided pamphlets with the rating information (U-Factor under 0.30 is EnergyStar). After a few more quotes from other vendors, I called Home Exteriors Energy Consultants Inc and decided to move forward. The price quote was at the lower-end of about 10 different quotes. My gut told me the quote was lower because this company knew what they were doing. Door prices are published online, so I could tell the other vendors were heavily padding their quotes. Home Exteriors Energy Consultants knows what they are doing! Professional and efficient. The crew showed up on time. 4-5 installers came, and despite a rather serious rain downpour and rainy morning, they completed the job in about four hours, always addressing my concerns about proper insulation. As luck would have it, they already had the door in stock because another customer didn't want it anymore. So it took less than a week to schedule and complete the job. Usually, they said, door orders take 2 weeks. The other vendors said 6-10 weeks. Overall, I'm very happy with the door and service. I've written this review because I had so many problems finding a reasonably priced installer who could give me an accurate quote. These guys are very reliable and professional. They install sliding glass doors with frequency."

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Woodbridge, VA

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
