"Excellent. He showed me each area that needed improvement and made suggestions as to how to accomplish the desired level of integrity. Most of the fixes were relatively minor and easy to do myself in a short period. The major expense items normally recommended were discretionary (increased attic insulation, etc.), and he said they probably were not worth the expense vs. the savings potential in my home--a refreshing approach, since other potential auditors were also contractors and indicated in initial contacts that they would be "happy" to install new windows, insulation, etc. David is not a contractor and only performs the audits, so he has no hidden agenda like selling his contractor services. His service was also considerably cheaper than his competition. His suggestions dealt with repairs the homeowner can perform himself, and he gives you the option of repairing and sealing leaks vs. replacing the windows, doors, etc. David was very professional and courteous, and promptly provided a detailed report with the results he found and his recommendations for improvement. He also followed up when I told him I had completed the checklist of repairs he listed in his report, and performed a re-audit at NO CHARGE, providing another report after that was completed. As the result of his audit and recommendations, I was able to lower the heat setting on my thermostat a full 2 degrees and still maintain the same level of comfort with fewer drafts. That will translate into a reduced gas and electric bill immediately, and should also reduce my air conditioning costs. I will get my investment back in a very short time, including the caulking, weather stripping, and about 8 hours of my time. I would highly recommend David to any homeowner who is handy and looking to save money on their utility bills, as well as conserving energy."

"Kelley Markowski was a very proficient and diligent energy auditor. She has very strong communication skills and was available to answer questions after the audit was completed. She was very comfortable with the energy audit equipment and careful getting it inside the house on exit. She was very professional explaining what she was going to do and what it meant. She was very focused on educating me as to what to do to accomplish recommendations. The original audit and follow-up took several hours and Kelley was focused on doing a good audit and not trying to merely finish. She was very flexible about waiting to go to the exit and until I had completed artwork. She was also punctual on both visits. I would use her service again and recommend to friends."

"I can not say enough good things about the experience.  Tom was very knowledgable, thorough, efficient and professional. He is also very personable and easy to talk to.  He e-mailed a full detailed report to us within the promised 10 days, which included all the thermal pictures and his suggestions to increase the energy efficiency of our home.  <br /> <br /> We did end up hiring Tom to perform some of the suggested improvements.  Some high priority items were done immediately, and a few other things were done the next year.  Tom was again, meticulous in the work he performed.  I would highly recommend Thermal Vision and Tom Ochsner for the energy audit service he performs, as well as his work as a contractor to make the related repairs."

"<p>The energy audit was comprehensive allowing us to prioritize decisions and investments to make the home more energy efficient.  (Mo Ameren is raising rates a double digit rates to comply with new govt. regulations.)  Daniel?s price for an energy audit is higher than other companies because he is not using the energy audit to sell insulation or HVAC services; i.e. it is not a loss leader. He is certified and experienced in home energy efficiency, in fact he gets excited about the topic.   I used him after the energy audit at a reasonable rate to perform consulting to direct the insulation, HVAC, and window upgrade key decisions.  As a result, I understand what is needed and am in a better position to engage the various companies in an informed manner.  We are not completely finished with implementing the energy upgrades, but making progress.  Daniel is honest and knowledgeable.     We are very satisfied with the work.  </p> <br />"

"Our experience was great. We had a house fire and our system was damaged. Mike Boone came out and talked to us and gave us an estimate. Within a couple of days the team was here replacing everything for us. Upon completion, Mike came out to review the installation and make sure it was satisfactory. His professionalism and personable attention to our needs set a very high standard. We highly recommend Energy Stars! <br />"

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Saint-Louis, MO

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
