"Nate was very professional and knowledgeable. He tested the home with a door blower, infrared photos to detect heat transference, in-depth inspection of home, and a comprehensive interview. An energy model was developed from all the data and photos from the initial audit. From all this information Nate come up with an exhaustive plan for improving not just the energy efficiency of the house but also ways to improve the comfort, health and safety of the home. The plan is like a road map that spells out what needs to be done to reap the most benefits with opportunities for saving money by doing it yourself clearly defined. We had hired Energy Smart Home Performance initially because of problems with ice dams on our roof but we found that there were bigger issues that need to be addressed also. Now that we know what to do we can make good decisions as we proceed with our home improvement. <br />"

"We have had the good fortune of working with Walter on a number of projects.  He initially did a full energy audit for us and advised us on issues like how and where to insulate.  He has educated us on how to save money and resources in our home.  Walter is thoroughly knowledgeable, and he is a very good and patient teacher.  We recommend him without reservation."

"to work with.that the The project went well. Good Sense did an energy survey of our home.  They provided us with a detailed report of the problems they found. It confirmed much of what we knew. After we had insulation installed they returned to verify that the job would meet the safety and energy saving requirements for the Gas company to provide our government energy rebate. There were a few problems found and they contacted the installer to make the necessary adjustments. Those were completed and they returned to check that the repairs were satisfactory. We were provided with the completed survey and applied for the rebate. We had a choice at completion we could either receive the $50.00 as a refund or we could use it to purchase a CO Detector from them. We elected to purchase the detector. <br /> The complete experience was very professional and the inspectors were great. <br />"

"We had Aviles come out as part of the gas company's WarmChoice program after an energy audit. They were the second company we called off their list of approved contractors.  After Alex came out we were convinced they were the ones to go with. We had a few scheduling changes (from both us and them), and they finally came out in early June to perform all the work. It was originally planned for a two day job, but weather got in the way and they needed an extra day to finish. No problem. 4 - 5 guys came out, all very quiet and very respectfull of our house,  they even laid down tarps where they were walking, and cleaned up everything before they left. My wife was home alone while they did the work and she usually does not like being alone when people are working at the house, but she felt very comfortable around them. She even baked them cookies (which were eaten very quickly)...  <br /> As for the work, they air-sealed the house with spray foam, from the basement to tthe attic along with some plastic in some larger spots. Nothing that looks bad, and so far has worked well.  They also did in-wall blown-in cellulose insulation from the outside on the first floor. They took some aluminum siding off, drilled holes and shot it in from there. I saw no signs that they ever did, not a single dent in the siding...   On the 2nd floor, they drilled 1 1/2" holes in the drywall covering the rafters and walls and blew it in from there. We gutted the upstairs and the drywall was unfinished, so that was fine, the holes covered up just fine when we finished mudding it. They then blew about 12" of insualtion in the crawl spaces and in the attic areas, then cut 4 vents in the side of the house to properly vent those areas. <br /> In the end the final price came out to about (IIRC) $3200.  But after Columbias instant rebate to Avilas and the rebate to us, the final price came down to about $1100 ! Cant beat that for whole house insulation and air sealing ! <br />  We have already recommended Avilas to others who may need this kind of work, they did a great job! <br />"

"Brian, Service/Sales, set a new bar for integrity, product knowledge, and overall customer service! I was told I needed a new furnace(asap), and Brian completed a very thorough analysis, and shared proof that I actually didn’t. I will definitely have Brian/Jennings do my service contract and go with them for future HVAC needs!"

"I am in love!  I absolutely love this company.  Had them over to quote for a furnace/ac.  (Will review that after it is done)  Told Tim I wanted a new hot water tank now!  Told him I wanted the biggest/best/hottest tank you can get.  Tim told me that I didn't need the biggest.  That a 50 gal tank would serve our needs.  Cost was 850 for the tank and I needed two shut off valves put in so that was $50 each.  Tim sent a lovely fellow named Kevin to my home on Monday.  Appointment was at 9:00.  I think he got here at 8:55.  The service manager was in and out during the 4 hours to assist/check on work.  He was also polite and nice and easy to work with.  Kevin installed the water heater, the shut off valves, and left the place cleaner than when they started.  Also, the work is nice and shiny and clean and you can tell they take pride in this. <br /> Also got a new flue liner for half the price we had paid before because it was not big enough to vent all of the carbon monoxide that we needed vented.  That was $425. <br /> I have a total of zero complaints.  I have hot water.  Work was good, on time, and clean.  There was pride.  They use an american manufacturer.  I am a big fan and plan on using them to do my HVAC system in the spring. <br />"

"FANTASTIC! Definitely would use again. Steve Spaeth & Bill were a great team. Steve knows his stuff and does a great job of getting insulation added to every corner, even our vaulted ceiling. Despite the high temp of attics in summer and cramped quarters Steve works diligently to pay attention to the details that other contractors ignored, such as venting bathroom fans properly & not blocking air flow through attic vents. Not only will my home be warmer this winter for less, but I also expect an ice dam issue at the front entry to be eliminated. Money not only well spent, but reduction in energy costs will most likely pay for this improvement within a year. BEFORE YOU CALL ANY CONTRACTOR I highly recommend the home owner have an Energy Audit performed by their Gas Supplier (Columbia Gas charges $50, but with discount reduced to $25). When combining Angie's List discount, Columbia Gas rebates to Insulation company & home owner, as well as Federal Tax credit through IRS the bill for adding insulation was reduced by just under $1,000.00 ... AND THEN there will be the monthly reduction in heating/cooling costs. I had to change thermostat by 8 degrees due to house now having less energy loss."

"The auditor was prompt, energetic, and courteous. He did a comprehensive analysis and presented several options for energy savings. He presented the plan for establishing contact with a contractor clearly, and made sure that I knew how to contact him if I had questions or concerns. The only reason for concern was a detail in the contract (for air sealing and attic insulation) which had locked in prices for a month. I did not choose to do the work until approx 3 months later. There was a contract clause that explicitly stated that the contract was void after 30 days. I was told that yes, this was what it said, but that prices had not changed, so just to go ahead and sign the original contract and all would be well. I was reluctant to do so, but the rep was persistent in saying it was no problem. I called back a few days later and said that I was not comfortable with the void clause and needed a new contract. After a bit more polite resistance the representative finally said they would check with their manager. He called back a few hours later and confirmed that a new contract would be sent. I am puzzled by this experience, as everything else had gone so smoothly. I take it for self-evident that a void clause cannot be ignored. <br />"

FAQs for home energy audit projects in Solon, OH

To prepare for a home energy audit, begin by preparing your space. Clear any obstructions around the attic, basement, ducts, crawl space, appliances, windows, and doors. Gather all your energy bills from the last year and information on home upgrades if you’ve made any changes. If you’ve previously had an audit done, include that information as well.

Finally, be prepared to discuss any questions or concerns you have. If you’ve noticed a rise in your energy bills, hot or cold areas in your home, or unusual sounds from ducts or appliances, make a list to discuss with your auditor.

How often you should get an energy audit depends on the age and condition of your home. New homes with no issues are recommended to get an audit every five years, while older homes should audit every two to three years. If you’ve noticed any changes to your energy bills or other areas of concern, you should get an audit as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to conduct an audit if you’ve made changes or upgrades to your home, such as installing a new furnace, windows, or doors.

An energy audit takes three to four hours to complete. Your auditor sets up testing equipment, conducts an exhaustive walk‑through inspection, and performs all required evaluations to identify energy loss points. The audit follows a systematic review that includes visual assessments, mechanical tests, and detailed documentation, resulting in a precise report of improvement recommendations.

You can schedule a home energy audit any time of the year—it all depends on what's convenient for you. That said, timing it right can help you tackle issues before they impact your comfort and bills. If you live in a colder climate and want to avoid high heating costs in the winter, getting an audit in the summer allows you to make improvements before the temperature drops. On the contrary, if hot summers are your concern, a spring audit can help you stay cool and save on air conditioning.

To find a qualified home energy auditor, start by searching for local energy auditors with great reviews and recognized certifications like those from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These credentials ensure they're qualified and can help you qualify for rebates. Don't hesitate to ask about their audit methods and schedule a consultation to see if they're a good fit for your needs. Doing some research upfront helps you get top-notch service and maximize your energy efficiency.

Once you have your energy audit report, it's time to take action. Review the recommendations and prioritize the upgrades that make the most sense for your home and budget. Reach out to experienced pros to get quotes and discuss how they can help. By making these improvements, you'll boost your home's energy efficiency, lower your utility bills, and enjoy a more comfortable living space.
